Northumberland. Friendly natives?

I'm just off for a week to Northumberland, just south and west of Wooler - only just into England really...
I'm keen to try a spot of mild greenlaning in my shiny D4 and wondered if anyone has experience of this area west of the A697 and into the foothills of the Cheviots. Are the natives friendly? Will I come across locked gates despite the OS maps saying it's a "Other route with Public Access"?

Ta.

Hairy Dan or GL5RO are the chaps to ask for in depth info, I've been in Northumberland as an import for a while, still get stared at as I've still got all my teeth, locals fine, loads to do & some great places to eat.
Enjoy.

Old LRO's are always a good source of greenlanes, we have used the a few times in cumbria and the coast to coast.

You will always find those not happy to see you, but respect the lanes, be pleasant to anyone you meet and you generally come away ok.

We found quite a few greenlanes in the Wooler area. My first in this shiny car was a lovely track heading south out of Ingram. It was nice and dry so it was really stupidly easy with all the gadgetry on that car. Was excellent fun watching the extreme axle articulation in the 4x4 info screen when I didn't go quite the way the lane intended us to go.
Had fun trying out all the Terrain Response things. HDC seemed to be overly careful although I understand the need to go slowly downhill. Didn't like what auto boxes do when left to their own devices going downhill. manual shift into Low 2nd was effective but maybe HDC actually knows what it is doing Surprised

Deeply impressed by the D4 compared to the D2. Both exceedingly capable offroad but the D4 made it effortless in normal road tyres.

I've got the bug now. Shame it's just not so easy to find places to go nearer to home in Scotland.

Green Road Run - 25th October
« on: September 30, 2015, 10:25:54 PM »QuoteFor the next Green Road Run on Sun 25th October, we will be returning to Heathland Forest which is right in the middle of the Central Belt - we last visited here 2 years ago and had an enjoyable day out. Forestry Commission have confirmed we can go ahead but have not yet provided detailed maps of what we can access, expected any day. Directions to the meeting point - from the A706 which runs between Forth and Whitburn, take the A704 east towards West Calder and the entrance is approx 1 mile along, on right Hand side - wide forest entrance with double gates. OS grid ref. NS 960 587. Sign on is between 10 and 11 - gate will be locked after that so don't be late. This forest offer a huge variety of tracks from a wide open highway to some tight little tracks. There may be some sections which are a little muddy and some optional sections which are a little overgrown - all still to be confirmed though. As usual, we' ll be setting you off in small groups with a map to explore. As with all GRRs this is suitable for all land rovers on road tyres -Any slightly tricky sections will be clearly marked on maps for anyone wanting to avoid them. Bring a picnic. Cost for this one will be £12 to cover slightly increased Forestry charges -still a bargain for what should be another cracking day out -over 20 miles of varied driving....and you can go round more than once, or repeat individual sections.
Members only, though new members can join up on the day. Please note that for insurance purposes, this event is only open to Land Rovers.
I could do with a couple of volunteers to be there early and to tape off areas we're not to go into - anyone fancy an early run round? Would also appreciate some help with sign-on and drivers briefing - please drop me a PM if able to offer assistance.
Can you let me know if you're intending to come to this so I've got an idea of how many maps to print.
If you haven't been on a Green Road Run why not come along and give this one a try. - it's what your Land Rover was made for! As ever, hoping to see a good turnout on the day,
Alan

Mark I do this as All Terrain Tours as a shiny vehicle friendly 'Relaxed & Scenic' tag. If you want to do this for free there are people on this (and other forum) who will sometimes organise a trip out. Whistle
There is always the Kielder 4x4 Safari and its for a great cause! Thumbs Up

Just had a quick look at you site and that County Durham Rambler type looks a good starter, so I will check work commitments and get back to you if that is OK Thumbs Up

Thanks Dave T and GSLRO.

I know that ford well as we usually stay very close by when in Northumberland. Sadly it is very low at the moment so hardly any splashing.

I'll have to keep an eye on SLROC for a gren lane trip. can't make that one on the 25th as already otherwise engaged but would love to do some of them. It's not as easy to just head off on a greenlane (or equivalent) in Scotland as it is in England. Maybe I'm missing a trick but eh Rights of Way are just so different.

Thanks for the info chaps.

Hi,

Did the Keilder safari yesterday and plenty of shiny cars. Quite tame course but you spend all day offload and its all for charity, the mountain rescue team. £60 quid for the day and definitely non damaging.
D3 Java Black 57 Plate SE, Night Breakers, Grabber ATs, Sidelight LEDs and best of all - Narpy torch. loads more to buy.

D4 61 plate XS (12Mod Year)
BabyRRR - gone and completely forgotten

I did the Kielder Safari earlier this year. Ian is a great leader/guide, but TBH I too found it a bit tame, nothing really challenging - and far too many trees Laughing

Also did an 'All Terrain Tours relaxed and scenic' - really enjoyed that Thumbs Up . But got home and found 2 x scuffed alloys Censored - always a risk I guess.
