CCTV warning sticker needed with dashcams??
I'm so excited - I'm just a day or two away from picking up my 2012MY Disco XS. I'm planning on getting front and read dashcams (prob Blackvue) as I've had just too many near misses in the old Td5 and I just want to be careful in a car that costs a substantial amount of dosh.
Now....a friend was advised by the Police to put warning stickers on his car after he had to use some video footage in defence of an insurance claim. Are CCTV stickers needed? Legal requirement? Does anyone know?

In a moving vehicle you will be capturing all sorts of data, peoples faces, number plates etc, the data protection act may apply and you should warn others that you are recording, and because you are collecting personal data anyone recorded can ask for access to the imagary....If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Only if you are a commercial entity ..the DPA doesn't apply to private individuals ..it's no different to you walking down the street with a camcorder recording all ....completely legal in a public place 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

As far as I know it's commercial vehicles, noticed a few driving instructors and delivery vans with notices on, but I suppose if you're installing on a company vehicle then it could be a requirement
The police never asked me, when I produced footage of a cyclist been knocked off when he tried to over take a bus and lorry

Absolutely correct, in my understanding of the DPA.

Unlikely. There are lots of exemptions in the DPA loosely under the banner of prevention and detection of crime. These exemptions can only be used by a few 'relevant authorities', the police being one of them.

From what I understand, private CCTV is only exempt if you are not capturing footage of neighbours property or the public areas surrounding your property.

I was involved in an accident a couple of years back and handed the Blackvue file over to the police. They were curious as to why I had a dashcam but no warning over using it. And in the end it saved me loads of hassle.
I did buy some stickers a few months back but left them off as I thought they would just alert some thief that I had a camera fitted:

I ride and drive with camera's running daily, one effect with the rear cam in the disco when spotted by tailgaters is they back off, but the video I get from the rear cam on the motorcycle is truly shocking with inattentive mobile phone using tailgaters barely inches off the back wheel in traffic, one of the reasons I now always look to filter if at all possible. As for signs, if it informs so others back off it might be worth while, but as most incidents, cash for crash or otherwise happen forwards the signs would probably have little benefit.
