Thanks for the helpful replies.
My first outing was ideally going to be one of the organised events, rather than just show up somewhere. I would be more hopeful of getting a bit more guidance/advice at something like that. The Sibbertoft event you mention would have been ideal, but came just a month too early, had only just picked up my car by then, thought it was a bit too soon, but that's exactly the sort of event and venue I will be looking for. That was a venue recommended to me as being non-damaging and plenty for the beginner.
Yarwell looks good too, not come across that one before, so duly bookmarked.
Also the trec day, another good suggestion. Mrs LT likes the idea of that as well, which is a bonus. Looks like they may have finished for this year, but certainly keep a look out for next spring.
I will get my kit together and keep an eye out for a suitable event.
Thanks. MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

Bit of an update.
Various bits of kit sourced, I think I have all the essentials needed.
Couple of possible pay and play venues identified, not ventured to any yet, but a few kind offers for people to come along with me.
Protrax half day training booked for early next month at Rockingham - looking forward to this.
Devon Trek day booked for September - with several days holiday in the area.
I will be looking out for any pay and play 'meets' MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff
