Unusual noise when the car is moving

Hi, I have discovery 3 HSE 2006 and have recently noticed that there is a unusual noise during excellerating and then when release. When the car is stationary there is no noise at all. To me the noise is like two rough metal pieces are scratching. Any ideas what that could be? Many thanks

Got exact same thing on my 2005 HSE auto. Wondering if it's gear box related as I need an oil change.

Mine makes this odd noise too, sounds a bit like a rubbing brake disc and seems to come from underneath.

I even tried jacking the car up and supporting it on four axle stands so I could get underneath with it running, it appears to come from somewhere around the rear propshaft or back of the transfer box, but I was still unable to accurately pinpoint it's source.

It's always done it and never got any worse so I just ignore it now.

Spoke with the local garage today about
gear box oil change and they said is to complicated.
They have a specialist for that, because few things may go wrong.
They said it will cost me £500-550.00
They olso said that the gear box oil is for life,so i have't any leaks or
flashing lights, therefor I m not gona change it.
Even if i do there is no guaranty the noise will stop. Rolling Eyes
Is the price alright ?

Don't believe everything your told, especially the "for life" bit regarding the gearbox oil. It is a well documented fact that if the gearbox oil is not changed then the box and/or the TC will almost certainly fail early. If yo do a search for gearbox problems you will learn more about the experiences of others.

That's a very helpful local garage you have there ves Laughing ... Mine too has that light scraping (schhhh) noise on the overrun, and has done from new Shocked Despite efforts to find out the cause, and mentioning it to supplying dealer ( who wouldn't admit to hearing it Twisted Evil ) I cannot pinpoint the source either, and despite having an auto box flush, txfer box oil change, and a couple of diff oil changes, since, the noise is still there, but has not got worse. I have mentioned before in other posts about this, that I have heard many other D3's and RRS's produce this noise under the same conditions, and I still maintain that mechanically something is not quite right, but I'll be damned if I'm going to lose sleep over it, that's for sure. Thumbs Up
Of course the LR dealerships lack of assistance with this, (and a few other things) on a new vehicle Whistle means that I will NEVER AGAIN buy one of their products, that's for sure too. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Mine has a similar sound too, but it's from the rear diff which needs new bearings, the noise has been there for some time never getting worse, but I keep an eye on the oil and change it at short intervals especially considering when I got the car last June and did the oil it was in a bad state and had signs of filings in it.

I've no sounds from the front but I do know that others here have had to have new front diffs which is an other known problem area, may be worth checking it out.

BTW ves, (HSE and noise....I'm assuming you do have an auto box Question ).... If you do have the gearbox oil flushed / changed,( bearing in mind that it may well not stop the noise), DON'T pay anyone that much Shocked ............Flush should be under £300 ( unless the merchant wants you to pay for the flushing machine outright Whistle )........just an oil change (draining and filling twice whilst running in between to maximise the amount of oil changed) should really cost quite a bit less than that. Thumbs Up

^^^As above^^^^ auto box oil change should be sub £300, my indy will do mine for £280 inc. or for an additional £100 will also do the sump and filter.

I too have had a persistent noise when transitioning from driving to overrunning at around 1500 to 2000 rpm, it has been present since I bought the car and is most noticeable when driving with the offside front window open. I would describe it as a light metallic rattle such as 2 metal pipes chattering together or a metal heat shield rattling. Both differentials and the transfer case have had ther oils changed, transmission has had a double oil drain, offside EGR valve has been replaced, any bit of loose shielding has been fixed, additional clips have been put on the metal fuel pipes that run up the right hand side of the engine, front suspension bushes and ball joints have been replaced, both front wheel bearings are new, cam belt, drive belt, alternator and all associated idler wheels and tensioner have been renewed. On the whole the car is a much nicer thing to drive than it was a year ago but throughout the Censored rattle has remained completely unchanged. The only consolation is that in 8000 miles it has not got any worse and some good rock music on the Logic 7 sound system covers it a treat Wink
