OT Question

Just wanted to get a local opinion on somewhere in SA rather than beleiving everything the press and tourist places have to say! I'm wondering what the Port Alfred area in the Eastern Cape (say from Port Elizabeth to East London) is like - say for safety, accessibility (roads/rail/air?), weather, etc?

Hi bkehoe.
The area you are referring to is absolutely beautiful. The coastline consisits of endless rivers, lagoons and sandy beaches. The roads are very good and safety is not an issue. Having said that, you always have to be sensible no matter where you are. If you wander into the wrong part of London/Edinburgh/Dublin at night you will be in trouble, right? The same applies here in SA. If you are sensible and don't wander off into some wierd far flung place you'll be fine. East London and Port Elizabeth are "low" crime ares epecially when compared to bigger cities like Johannesburg. South of Port Elizabeth is also stunningly beautiful as you enter the Garden Route from Knysna to Cape Town. I have travelled this strip of the coast extensively and have never had a problem. North of East London can get dodgy, especially in the Transkei, again if you don't know where you are going. The vegetation and beaches along this part of the coast (Wild Coast) become more subtropical and lush as you head north towards Durban. You won't regret visiting us here down south. Just don't tell all your mates how good it is. We like to keep it a secret. Uncrowded, unspoiled coasline is plentiful here. Oh, and we have the sunshine too. Can't help feeling desperate for you guys in the UK. Nice summer!!
