Knocking from the front end.

Hi there,

I am after people's thoughts on what to check next. I have got a knocking noise coming from what I believe to be the front near side wheel area.

I have recently changed the lower front arms, upper front arms were done a couple of years ago. Also both front wheel bearings, rear prop shaft and the clutch.

Really thought the prop was the cause of the knock as the centre support bearing was shot, but it still exists.

It is most noticible at slow speed if you go forward and backwards applying the foot brake.

I've check the brake caliper pads disc etc. also looked around all anti roll bars etc and can't find any movement in bushes etc.

Thank you taking time to read this.

Tim

Changing the arb bushes cured my knock, maybe the links as well?

+1 for arb bushes - mine had a really annoying clonk that I couldn't find. Took it into my local indie & they spent hours trying to find it - couldn't see any play in the bushes, but eventually with an 6ft bar behind the anti-roll bar, they just noticed a fraction on a mm's movement (only because it had been raining & they noticed a slight change in the film of water where the bar went through the bush). Changed the bushes & no more probe!

My knock turned out to be a failed drop link:

+1 on the steering rack ! I had a knock exactly as you described , changed the inner rods and noticed a bit of play (tiny) while tightening the rod. Ordered a re manufactured one from advanced factors. Comes with rods fitted. Also bought new o-rings. Really easy to change the rack but make sure the steering wheel doesn't move or you could damage the clock spring. No more knock !

Looks like ARB bushes for me. SO hard to track down where the noise is coming from - seems to move around depending on where you sit in the car!

+ another for ARB Bushes
Make sure that you replace both sides though!

Also don't always rely on where you think the noise comes from - its unlikely but it could be the back ARB bushes!

If it sounds more er more tingly like a rattle rather than a clonk it could be the drop-links.

Very true. Even tried having someone walk alongside the car listening to try and tie down the source!
Like the description of the various noises Thumbs Up
