Tim great reporting and wow what a great trip. For the realists in the UK, like me the trip would have cost us around £436 (751.40$) in diesel or £620 (1068.51$) in petrol had we been able to do the journey here. What was your final fuel bill?

United States 2005 LR3 4.4 V8 HSE Auto Zambezi SilverLR3

Home again home again. Heineken in hand.

The next time I decide to drive a trail truck and trailer 2800 miles I hope someone is there to hit me with a stupid stick. It would not have been too bad if I didn’t ‘need’ to get back in a hurry and made some detours to sightsee. But, the route I took there wasn’t much to see! Look at the pix!-

The most Ive ever driven nonstop is 24 hours straight, 1700 miles, but that was 15 years ago in my youth and in a car with working cruise control!

I was running premium unleaded at roughly $3.15 a US gallon. 245 US gallons for a trip cost of roughly $771. Which actually Im pleased with, I was thinking it would cost me a grand!!

And get this, when I got home my D3 was D.E.A.D. DEAD! And it had been sitting only 5 days. I stuck it on a charger for 10 minutes and it cranked. Oh well.

Im going by the dealer tomorrow in the D1 and Ill mention it to them but Im not gonna take it in for it.

I have to take the D1 over for them to see as they know I was getting it. And the funny thing about that is when I was 20 miles from home I see in the mirror a D2 approaching from behind. When he got next to me he slowed and I glanced over and it was my dealer’s service manager!!! He started honking and giving me the thumbs up when he saw who it was. And he was the one who told me ‘go for it' when I showed him the details about the truck.

You've inspired me Tim Smile In fact, I have persuaded the wife and kids that next Easter we are going to take another holiday in the States. Last time we did Florida and got totally theme-parked out Embarassed

This time we will be flying into San Francisco, hiring a car, and taking two weeks to drive a loop through various places like Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Las Vegas, and a few other 'must see' places, and ending up in Los Angeles to fly home.

So there ya go! you have done your bit for US/UK tourism promotion Wink

Now the next challenge is to see if I can arrange an LR3 for the journey.

Oh well it was worth a try Crying or Very sad I want to pick up in San Francisco, drive for two weeks, then drop off in Los Angeles. They will not do LR3 for this intinery. It must be returned to original collection point, and it is very expensive!

Looks like a Ford Explorer will be my wheels for 2 weeks.
