Portable Media Player - in car audio?
Hi Peeps,
in a vain effort at getting better quality sound out of my head unit, I have been going through my CD collection and re-encoding to lossless format (apple), which obviously is usually 5 times bigger per file than the mp3 version. It does make a huge difference to the quality of playback in the car, but sadly, my problem is that I am running out of space on the ipod with these larger files....and yes...I could buy and ipod classic with 160GB drive...so this is an option BUT....
1) Is there a way to import music directly into the head unit?
2) Has anyone got a portable media player that they have hooked up that allows connection through the car? perhaps using an iphone or similar? Or directly via USB
There are now portable media players out there that create local wireless networks for up to 6 people to able to view or listen to music and wondered if anyone had used one of these hooked up to the car audio system? The beauty of these media players is the disk size...and the content that can be streamed from them, including film - handy when you have teenage gorillas in the back...

I shall be getting one of the wireless storage drives. I will remove the headrest screens and the kids can watch their own videos on their tablets. Cuts out the arguing about what to watch
Was also planning to put music on there and then get swmbo's iPod to stream from it and into the aux socket.
Plan was also to use it in the tintent to keep the kids quiet and for us to watch some films instead of French TV!!
Will let you know how I get on.

lots of research to be done but this is what I am looking for
1) drive to store music on
2) big enough to store movies too
3) will have it's own battery
4) can work of powered USB too
5) Wifi network in-built to allow at least 5 simultaneous connections
6) Music (somehow) will be playable through car head unit either by USB or bluetooth
7) will provide a usable menu on the Disco's touch screen to make selections
8) Small
Alternatively, it needs to stream to an iphone, which in turn is connected to LR, allowing for menu choices to be made on iphone/LR touch screen...
Will revert as soon as I have worked out the best system!
You can stream to several devices at once. Good battery life and large memory. Seems to have come out the tops in a few group tests
Will probably get one in next few days.

I think Seagate own the Samsung drives business.
You can connect 8 devices so that should mean the art of conversation on holiday will be dead!!

I decided to buy the Seagste drive. Went with the 1 TB version in the end.
First impressions are very good. All very easy to set up. The apps are straightforward. The worst bit was actually copying the dvd's and getting the right programme for that. Saved directly to the drive rather than copying from computer.
Connected 2 tablets at same time watching different things and all was good.
Wanted to connect swmbo's ipod touch but the app requires ios7 but Apple in their wisdom have decided that her 4th generation touch wont accept it so we cant use it. and as im not falling into the trap of buying a new Apple device each time they bring one out I will happily stick to Android devices.
So I cant comment on music streaming but I was able to play the sample music on my andoid phone whilst watching a film on the tablet.
So all in all its a thumbs up from me and the real proof will be when we take it away but surfice to say there will be some headrest screens up for sale soon
