Recommended Disco3 spares for outback touring |
|
Hi all,
I’m looking to tap into our collective wisdom and experience out there on which Disco3 specific spare parts are worth carrying while outback touring.
We’re heading off on the Big Lap (well almost) in a month’s time, and will be well away from any LR dealerships for pretty much the duration.
Has anyone made up a list (or maybe we should start one here) of recommended LR part numbers etc?
Would appreciate any advice you can offer…
cheers Jeff

1/ Sat Phone, so you can phone LR Assist
2/ Spare Air Filter
3/ Spare Fuel Filter
4/ At least one tyre carcass (doesn't have to be new) as well as your spare wheel & tyre
5/ Extra fuses (Supercheap are 10% of the price of LR)

Yep,
What Rob and SKP said
I carry a few metre of airline, joiners and click on schrader valves in case of suspension line breakage or an airbag failure, enough parts to isolate the corners and pump them up individually if required.
A compressor. Tyre repair kit
I also carrier an oil filer cap and radiator cap - if you forget to put one of these back on or it comes loose on rough road you really will kick yourself.
Get at least 20 liters of water in there somewhere as well. I carry up to 100+ for some trips and have a removable tank that bolts to the rear floor.
Have fun.

If a Sat Phone is too expensive for you (was for me) get a GME EPIRB that sends your GPS coordinates as well as the distress beacon. Mine a GME MT410G has a 7-year battery, cost around $600 but I think you can get it a bit cheaper.
Other things to take are puncture repair kit and the mandatory air compressor as Ianv says. I went to my local tyre store and got the patches that you stick on the hole from inside the tyre and a rubber hammer and tyre levers as well as the sticky cord type of kit you can get from ARB. When getting a kit get one with metal handles as I thought about the cheep plastic handle breaking and then my hand with a metal spike through it.
The airline, joiners and click on Schrader valves are only a few dollars and cheep given the job you want them to do.
I googled EPIRBs and came up with a double offer see link
http://www.ja-gps.com.au/results.aspx?searchString=epirb%2Bplb
but its not a GPS equipped epirb but a separate GPS and EPIRB. The advantage of the MT410G is the sending of the GPS co-ordinates narrows the search area down to 45 metres not a 5km circle, which is 80 square kilometres.
With all the research that we did we, found that just talking to people gave us the most memorable destinations.
Have Fun,
Ryall

how long are you going for? When we went we rented a sat phone. Found a guy on the web who hires old style phones (that still work perfectly well) for a few $$ a day (15??) - and you can use your own SIM card wihtout having to buy and hours in advance...
If you want I can dig out his contact details? Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

Also take a spare pollen filter with you, it sits behind the lower glove box on the passenger side. I also used my air compressor to blow out any crap in my pollen filter several times. After each clean out the aircon seemed to work better. Cost around $70 from the dealer.
A friend had his aircon shut down last summer around Birdsville, because of a blocked filter, so they had the windows wound down, which let in the bulldust which in turn stuffed the disk drive for the satnav unit and would probably upset the CD player as well.
Also as Rob Bruce says get a real jack as the LR one is crap.

Norto, I wonder if anyone else has installed a deisel gas system? Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

He has the RHS (new) if anyone needs one.

Hi Norto,
If you are juts going to put the catalyst amount through you only need a pretty small tank, about 20 Litre.
Can you fit one against one of the chassis rails. If you have a look at the ecoshot.com.au site they have a picture of one of the smaller tanks on the chassis rail of a td5.
Otherwise I guess you will join the rear wheel carrier brigade. About half a day to fit, hardest part for mine was the 11 holes to drill into the rear chassis.
All the best

Ian
I thought about removing the exhaust system from just past the cat convertor
and putting in a small muffler and that would be the end of the exhaust (just a small pipe angled down just behind the front crossmember) , then fit the tank where the muffler is now. Pete

Well, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with the response Thankyou to all for your input so far, there's alot of good oil there, stuff I would never have thought of (air hose and fittings, pollen filter, thanks IanV and TDV6).
Found a mob in Sydney that do sat phones for $16 per day (for 30+ days).
So, here's the list:
sat phone
EPIRB
air filter
pollen filter
fuel filter
spare wheel/tire & tyre carcass
tyre repair kit
fuses
fan belt
radiator hoses or some universal hose and clamps
ducting tape and gaffer tape
cable ties
soft fencing wire
oil
assortment of small bolts, self tappers , plastic clips etc.
apropriate tools, a real jack, recovery gear
few metres of airline, joiners and click on schrader valves
air compressor
oil filer cap and radiator cap
20 litres of water minimum
have fun!
Cheers Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Regarding the pollen filter... I was wondering if the initial failure was because the owner didn't put the A/C onto recirculate when traveling in dusty conditions? Comments anyone?
Cheers,
Rob
