Dual Battery - Safe Voltage level?

I have an Optima Blue Top Deep Cycle 55AH dual battery fitted - what is the "safest" voltage I can drain the battery to before recharging, so as not to damage the battery?

Don't know anything about it but the optima is a ddep cycle and pretty tough, they are designed to be drained but not sure how many cycles they can take or how far you should go.
What are you running off it?

Mainly a 40L ENGEL fridge (continuously) and a few other accessories intermittently - read various articles on how far a battery should be drained and some advice appears very conservative which would only run the fridge for a day.

Hi Young,
I can't answer specifically for the Optima, but deep cycle batteries can generally be discharged by up to 80% of their capacity (this occurs at about 11.1V).

On the other hand, the Engel (and I imagine all similar fridges) run much harder with decreasing supply voltage, shortening its life. (I think that the Engel may even shut down if the voltage drops to 10V (but I may be corrected on this, which is way below the level at which deep cycle batteries can be discharges without reducing their life).)

HTH,
Peter

Hi Young,

I have a yellow top optima and a National Lunar Split Charge system. Couple of months ago I left the car for 4 days without being used and also left the 32l Engel and other items connected. When I started up and the charger kicked in the sudden draw to charge the optima blew the 50A fuse. I didnt spot this and the end result was the battery discharged to about 2 volts. I couldnt charge it using the split charger (because it kept blowing the fuse) but managed to charge it using a CTEK charger. And its been fine every since, and will easily run the ENGEL at around 1degree for 4 days.

Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Remember that that the ambient temperatures typically are higher in Oz than England and so the fridge will be working harder, meaning that the battery will run down sooner.

I wonder how much you shortened your battery life? Shocked

agreed, ambient temp was just over 30 degrees. Thumbs Up

Ive no idea how much the battery life has been shortened, but we took the car and friege camping through spain. We ran it for nearly 3 at 1 degree with an ambient temperature of over 45 degrees and it held the charge well, as expected Thumbs Up
