Upper tailgate switch full of salt?

Went to put my bag in the boot this morning and couldn't open the tailgate. Could open it with the help of my son and the two finger lock trick on the dash. The switch felt like there was nothing under the rubber.

When I got to work I nearly asked my boss if I could feel his tailgate switch as my feels a bit funny but decided this could be misunderstood.

I Looking at other posts I decided it must be the micro switch so I pulled off the rubber cover and I found what looks like more salt than a Siberian salt mine.

I noticed that the same white deposit is round the handle fixing screws, is this really salt? I have so far resisted the lick it to see, again not sure the neighbours would understand.

Tried to unscrew the handle to get a better look but most of the screws are stuck fast and one just spins round. What do the screws screw in to?

Glad I didn't lick it then. Shocked

Do you think is just water getting round the rubber cover or can it get in from the top?

The screws go into brass type inserts that are Censored . They either don't grip or fall apart. Mine currently has only two in. The other holes I have covered up with gaffer tape waiting till I need to replace the assembly again......

Another terrible design...... like the torx headed bolts on the bottom of the front bumper

Join the club, that is exactly how my 07 plate switch looked when I replaced it about 12 months ago.

Try this post for a cheaper option than replacing the whole tailgate handle!

Mods - should the above post be in the wiki as there seems to be a lot of switch failures needing a £70 or £80 handle when it appears that there is a much more cost effective solution?

The idea behind the Wiki is that it gets its content from the forum members. Too few of us contribute so give it a go and add the information.

Robbie is correct. Anyone can add an article to the Wiki. Its worth a look, as it is not as difficult as you think Thumbs Up

Thanks all for the information, a little disturbed at Robbie's D4 licking link but live and let live I say.

After a bit of chipping away the metal part of the switch it is moving again and the micro switch looks fine underneath. I can see metal will give up as some point, so being a bit of a geek I am going to look at 3D printing some sort of replacement. If I get this working I will post the file here.

All good anyway.

Thanks

I've had exactly the same issue twice now. First time I replaced the entire handle as I fancied a nice colour coded one anyway. After 2 years that one started playing up to so I removed the cover to reveal the same mess underneath, I removed the metal plate cleaned it up with wire wool, sprayed it with WD40 and replaced (removing plastic switch housing from handle makes replacing cover simple)...works a treat now and a 5 minute fix if it corrodes again Thumbs Up

My apologies, I mistakenly thought that the ability to add items to the wiki was restricted to those with specific permission to edit the wiki.
