1st service at 15500 miles / 9 months...

Ouch. Got a text and email with links to a video requesting me to approve £1298.00 or work!!!

Urgent was rear brake pads at £200.00 at 1mm!

Rest was front brakes advisory at 5mm and 4 new tyres....




 26 and on the 4th LR..
Series 2a 1963 88'' 2.25 Derv as original with Galv chassis
Disco 1 1996 V8 on LPG (sold now)
Disco 3 2005 TDV6 S (sold now)
Disco 4 MY15 XS Commercial

Pretty easy to pop new brake pads in yourself but rather surprising to go through a set so quickly.

I tow about 60% of the time so I'm questing that is to blame.

I'm pretty manic currently so got them to do the rears. Going to do the fronts myself when it calms down a bit and shove on some ATs when the pirellis get to their end 👍🏻

If your trailer's brakes are working properly it should do virtually all its own braking and you should hardly feel it pushing you at all.

So you haven't needed front brakes yet, but need rear pads! Question

That doesn't sound right.

My front pads & disks lasted 30k miles, and the rear have yet to have attention at 70k miles. I don't hang around, but I don't use the brakes much either.

I know the Jaguar XJ is a very different vehicle but as far as braking goes I wonder if there are similarities?

It is well known for current XJs to go through rear pads quicker than fronts.

As little as 18k miles in my experience and that is with no towing as you can't tow with the current XJ.

I wondered if the cruise control and speed limiter use the rear brakes to control speed and also I think perhaps the brakes are involved with the traction control and stability systems.

I have dound Pagid to last much better than OE ATE pads.

My Jaguar XFS got through rear pads very quickly. I was told that it was to the active rear suspension and anti-dive stuff.

Dealer told me the reason i got through rear brakes quicker than fronts was to do with the brake compensation system in the disco? i took it with a pinch of salt but maybe?

One very simple check: any sign of excess heat coming off the wheels? They can change the pads all they like, but if the callipers are sticking, like mine were... Rolling Eyes

18k miles can easily take Pirelli Scorpion Zeros down to 1.6mm, so they may have been advising an early change at 2-3mm. Don't pay stealers for tyres; use www.tyreleader.co.uk Thumbs Up

Not heard of tyreleader but have found the prices on Oponeo to be competitive.

I bought my last set of tyres on Oponeo and saved over £50 a corner.

The only drawback is you need to find a tyreshop that is happy to fit tyres that you supply them as they will be losing their markup.

There's a list of fitters on tyreleader.co.uk that have signed up to the process. Just ring around them and get the best quote. Monitor prices while you've still got a legal tread and then purchase when a good deal appears. I got 4 Pir. Sco. ATRs for £140 ea. inc. £11 fitting. Thumbs Up

That seems a decent price.

Another option for those based in Essex or North East London is Tyre Shop near Walthamstow Dogs.

Ask for "H"

They have the machine for Road Force Balancing aswell.
