MOT - advisories

Hello all

My D3 had its MOT this morning, I was pleased it passed especially as its coming up to 10 years old but had two advisories.

The first was slight play in nearside front lower ball joint - normal wear and tear so I'm not too fussed.

The second I'm a little concerned at was slight play in offside front wheel bearing - concerned as its new was only fitted in April and ordered from a site sponsor on here.

I would appreciate any advice.

Get a 2nd opinion on the bearing, may have been an enthusiastic tester, if there is play then speak with the supplier first - site sponsors are usually very helpful Thumbs Up

^^

I once tried to order the "cheaper" bearing from a site sponsor but was told that if I did so I'd be back asking for it's replacement under warranty in 6 months and strongly advised to go for the Timken.

If it was the Timken that's gone then I'd be very, very, surprised - if it was the "cheaper" one then it could just be par for the course...

I don't understand an 'advisory' on a wheel bearing - it's either right or it's wrong Neutral

But they wear gradually rather than fail instantly. The amount of wear can be assessed to determine how much life it likely has left and a judgement can be made as to whether it needs to be done now or can wait a while. It's not a perfect system, as there's an element of subjectivity to it, but on the whole it's an arrangement that's worked well for many years.

Once there is perceptibly play in a bearing then the hammer affect increases dramatically, coupled with the extra forces from turning make me consider a front bearing with play should be changed out as soon as possible.

On the other hand I have bearings in a field roller that have huge amounts of play but all they'll get is greased before use !

Hi all

Thanks for the replies guys, I had already planned on a second opinion going later to see my mate who fitted it with me. He's very experienced having worked his way from the garage floor to service manager and has been an MOT tester in his previous life.

I cannot recall what make it was but pretty certain it wasn't Timkin but then neither was the nearside and that's not failed after two months. I will not name the sponsor in open forum as that's not fair but I will be contacting them very shortly.

If it's the sponsor I (probably we) think it is then I'm pretty sure they know the score with these bearings now. Thumbs Up

Well I've visited my mate, we've checked it definitely play in the bearing even after nipping it up a little bit so I guess the two month old bearing now needs changing.

I don't want another low quality bearing as this one appears to be, I will be wanting a Timken, lets see how I get on with the supplier.

Hi all

Thought I'd give an update on the wheel bearing.

I contacted the supplier initially via e-mail before ringing them on Saturday, to begin with I felt like I was being treat like a fool especially when asked how much play was in the bearing - my point being enough to be an advisory on an MOT after only two months.

The result has been I've ordered and received a Timken bearing from them, and I've fitted it today surprising the play has gone. The old one is getting collected tomorrow hopefully to go back to the supplier which should see me being refunded half the cost of the Timken one providing they agree it's faulty!

Interestingly the two month old bearing I removed today is the first one I've seen covered in grease on the back of it, as you can see in the photo.

Shocked Looks like the bearing seal has gone and emptied it so would be running drier and drier hence the wear and 'play' pretty poor after only 2 months! Confused
