Intercooler Cleaning Advice Please

Hi, Thank you for reading this post.

After a recent temporary power loss and lots of advice, I have decided to replace the intercooler pipes with uprated ones as a matter of preventative maintenance and to possibly replace a broken pipe if one is split. Either way, All intercooler hoses are being replaced with Silicon ones made by Britpart which were £69 delivered.

While I am doing this and while I have rare use of my parents driveway, I want to clean out the intercooler, I have a couple of cans of carb cleaner and plan on cleaning the EGR's too.

What is the best way to clean an intercooler out? Can it be done without it being removed from the car? I only have 1 day to get this done which is this Saturday.

Cheers

The last time I cleaned out an intercooler was on a 300tdi Discovery many moons ago.

I took the intercooler out of the vehicle in the morning, laid it on its back and filled it with the paraffin. I then let it soak for about 3 hours, drained it of the now very black paraffin, and poured in the remaining litre or so. This I sloshed about to rinse out any residue and again drained it. Next, I rinsed it out with a hosepipe and at this stage I was quite surprised to see even more black crud being flushed out. I let the water run through until it was clear. Finally, I laid it in the sun to dry and used my wifes' hair dryer (I asked first!) to blow out any remaining paraffin fumes before re-fitting. It made a world of difference.

I can't see how you could clean it effectively without removing it from the vehicle.

Yeah, that is what I was afraid of lol. I guess I need to add taking the intercooler off to the list of jobs for the day lol.

Hope it's easy to take off.

If you've never stripped the front end of a D3 before, then expect to take 3-4 hours to strip it out. Personally, I would just replace it. After-market or OEM...... Thumbs Up

Does the front end really need stripping down?

Front bumper off to get to it properly, you could wash it from behind by ,asking up a 90deg bend on a pipe and attaching to a hose pipe, need to remove the fan dowel to get to it Very Happy

I am just watching a youtube video for removing the front bumper, looks quite easy. But re-considering doing the intercooler this weekend with everything else that needs to be done.
