play in my propshaft (oo-er)
When I replaced my prop after the disintegration of my center bearing, I noticed both rotational and lateral play in the rear diff.... I've also recently been getting grinding noises when cornering accompanied by a red (!) popping up on the dash, which disappears after a few seconds.
I'm guessing my rear diff is slightly worse for wear, so my question is, should I spring for a new/second hand working one, or are the multitude of 'rebuild kits' floating around ebay capable of fixing my maladies?
cheers

When the 'dynamic stability control' kicks in on corners it can make a quite alarming grinding sound by pulsing the brake on one wheel. I had this when my tracking was off and it was trying to correct my sliding (steering) round the causeway, trying to send me into the loch.
If it is the DSC causing the noise, try pressing the DSC button at the start of the journey.*

The diff flange should have no noticeable play in either direction. I expect it's a standard taper bearing /collapseable spacer setup. For there to be play one of 3 things has occurred. First off the flange nut has come loose, this does happen sometimes. Second the spacer has collapsed, possibly by an impact on the flange. Third the bearings have started to break up. This will be accompanied by metal particles in the oil and on the magnoplug.
Me, I'd be checking the flange nut for tightness first and drain the oil for a quick look. After these a strip down for a rebuild is needed.Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

would that cause the rotational play as well?
How difficult is it to strip the diff? I'm confident enough to remover the diff assembly, but delving into its inner workings has me a bit nervous.what is this life, if full of care?
