Calibration after clutch change

I had my clutch swapped out of my Disco 3 Manual, 08 plate, by a mechanic recommended by a friend of a friend who drives Jaguars. I've got the car back and now I have a 'Transmission Range Change not available' error. I'm not sure my mechanic had done a Disco before Shocked

It makes sense to me that the transmission would need to be recalibrated after a new clutch was installed, but having tried the manual method described elsewhere here (hold the accelerator down and the range switch for 5 seconds etc.), nothing seems to happen.

Am I one of the 'lucky' ones who can only have this calibration done using an IID tool or similar? If someone could confirm for me, that would be great.

Also, is there anyone in the Coventry area who be prepared to hire out their IID, or better still, perform the calibration for me. I'd be happy to pay a fee of course!

Is it displaying the selected gear immediately that you change gear?

If not, train the XYZ sensor by:
On a quiet stretch of road, engage low box.
Reverse until R shows in the dash.
Then drive through each gear in turn 1,2,3,4,5,6, holding it in each gear until the gear number displays.
Stop. Turn engine off.
Restart....hopefully fixed?

Just re-read and saw transmission range change not available.
Might be worth trying it in the range you have now, but I've probably put the solution to the wrong problem.

The calibration of the sensor requires the gear changes to be done systematically. It doesn't work just by normal driving, even if you use all the gears.
It doesn't sound like it's the fault you have though.

Anyone out there who has any ideas?

My mechanic has checked through all the usual things and checked they are connected, but I'm still none the wiser. The diagnostic scanning tool he had (Snap On Modis) offered to recalibrate the x-y, which he did, but this made no difference. The tool also gave a code P147b, which I will search for now.

I also have no reverse lights, which is to be expected I suppose given the car has no idea what gear it is in.

I have read elsewhere that the brake light switch is somehow related to these problems. This is blue and white switch behind the panel under the steering wheel. My brake lights work though Confused Anyone think this might be it?

Not unheard of - the brake light switch contacts carbonise and cause all sorts of problems. At around £12 or so, it's an easy fix.

Not a bad idea to carry one on the vehicle anyway - just in case.

Thanks - I guess I'll change it and see what happens! My brake lights are currently working fine though, is that to be expected?

OK, so I've changed the park brake switch and that's had no effect.

Other than taking it to the stealers, what other things should I be checking?

Have you checked the brake bulbs? (I say checked, but really, it's best to replace them with a high quality pair regardless.) Question
