EPB Issues - Assistance or advice please
Hi all
I have had ongoing issues with my EPB, not the normal squeals etc but it simply not working. (amber light, switch not doing a damn thing) It went into the local dealers last year and we got it back 7 months later!! They have replaced the epb and done some wiring repairs but it worked. About 10 days later the epb failed again so booked the vehicle back in with them (if they hadn't done the original work I would have gone somewhere else!). waited 6 weeks for a courtesy car and they have just called me tonight. They say that there are loads of stored codes and that they have contacted LR head office who are saying as that the harness has been repaired the next step is body off and replacement. Now my first question is was the original epb module faulty. secondly, am I right to question the original harness repairs and as to why they may have failed so quickly. thirdly should I be expected to pay the whole cost of the harness repair if that is deemed necessary as the nearly £1k I paid for the epb repair simply hasn't worked. should I be expecting the original repair to have some kind of guarantee.

Wiring faults are always open to abuse, ie they can say what they like and you cannot really disprove them.
It is the curse of all modern vehicles.
Used to see loads of it at a truck dealer, mechs from other make truck dealers said they had the very same issues.
The reason the wiring fails? its to bloody weeny thats why

So they have redone the wiring checks and left me a vm on Friday. They have said they are certain it is not the module, but this is exactly what it was doing before it went in last year and they replaced the module.I suspect they still want to do body off and harness replacement. I am getting in writing that if they replace the harness and the fault remains I am not going to pay for it.
How much am I looking at for the harness replacement?

There is no need to fit a new harness if there is doubt. The vehicle does not care if a substitute set of jumper wires is draped around the vehicle to 'prove' the fix.

I have read some weird stuff on this forum, but sending a car to the dealers and only getting it back after 7 months ( ), 10 days of fun and than another 6 weeks ...... And for something relatively simple as EPB? I guess this is not your main drive. I can understand your frustration but to me you're taking a lot from these guys.RLD Sump Guard

I had a lot of other more important stuff going on at the time. I am going back in tomorrow to tell them to run some external jumpers. This is stuff I could do myself if I had the time. Get this sorted and onto the lack of power issue!

Well here, after another 5 weeks is the dealers report.
U0128-87 Lost Communication with Park Brake Module - Missing Message
I went in yesterday and they are adamant that the harness needs replacing I took my wiring diagram in and asked them to show me which wires were damaged which they could not do. I then asked to see the vehicle. After 15 minutes I was taken to my car which was up on the ramps and their technician was there. He explained that as the harness had been repaired previously that it now needed replacing. they could not show me where the overlays were put on and then proceeded to tell me they believed the fault was in the connector block for the epb and that a harness was required as this was not available separately. I am not happy with the diagnosis and when the manager said they needed the loan car back as I had had it for 4 weeks I respectfully replied that they had had my car for 7 MONTHS last year. I believe that the dealer is not going to budge on this so any suggestions please.

On the other matter, that of lack of power. On the previous visit the air module (Y-shaped) on the top of the engine was replaced which cleared the whooshing noise but there is still no power. My egrs are both blanked but they are insisting that replacing the egr will correct the fault. They say that although they are blanked there is an electrical circuit which is causing the underboost message. I bow to superior knowledge but I reading on this forum, I don't believe them.
I do have other issues with the car (air suspension but this is the compressor) but these two are the big ones and I have already paid to have the dealer sort them but to no avail.
I am minded to remove my vehicle for a second opinion elsewhere for wiring checks and if it is proved that the wiring could have been easily repaired and/or the epb module has failed again that I then seek further advice from trading standards/legal.
I am just after a bit of advice, technical, and also if people agree with my next course of action.

PS Anyone know of someone who is good with wiring and electrical diagnostics on Teesside/North East area.
On the lack of power front, you are correct in that it won't be your EGRs. If your butterfly housing was replaced, was the butterfly also removed from the replacement?

The dealer replaced it and did not remove the butterfly so I did it myself, this made no difference. I would hope that the dealer checked the hoses but I am going to take the car elsewhere for a second opinion.
The actuator got stuck a few years ago and I was getting ESF but the previous mechanic (no longer trading) just freed it off. I have no ESF error currently but will get that looked into.
I have spoken to trading standards and explained that the dealer will not check the epb wiring again as well as the lack of power issue. they have advised getting a second opinion elsewhere but to give the dealer a letter explaining the course of action I am taking and my expectations once that inspection is complete.

For the want of a pair of twisted wires pinned to somewhere on the HS CAN and then to the EPB the harness question would be answered immediately. If the problem went away with the jumper wires in place we would have the answer.

Does the error indicate CAN issue? I went in with the wiring diagram and asked them to demonstrate which wires were the concern and they couldn't, even when looking underneath the car.
Trading standards have been informally told and advice gained.
I have lost confidence in the dealer and will be taking it elsewhere for a second opinion

The U-code could indeed indicate a BUS problem, but you would need to see symptoms too as U-codes can be generated for absolute trivia. Indeed, without symptoms it is usual to ignore and clear U-codes.

Cheers Robbie. The symptoms are the red (P) and no response from the brake at all. These are the symptoms when it went in and they said they replaced the epb module and carried out wiring checks and repairs. The fact that I was under the vehicle yesterday and they couldn't show me where the faults/repairs were or show me on my wiring diagram where the fault lay makes me wary. Although not a mechanic I am able and studied electrical engineering at university and do know how to do voltage/continuity tests on wiring and to keep a log of the test. they did not have this information to hand so have either not fully carried it out or have been careless in not keeping a record of the wiring checks. In any case I have written a letter to give them, on advice of trading standards, when I collect my car to explain my grievances, actions to be taken and my expectations on completion of a second opinion.
