Off Road / Recovery Basic Equipment List

I'm looking at whats needed in a basic off road / recovery kit as will do some pay and play days soon. Having done some research just want to confirm what I think is needed to start out and then build on.

1x 4.5m 5 tonnes tow strap - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150687717799?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT
2x 3.25t tested bow shackles - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111181645292?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT
1x gloves
1x tyre pressure gauge - (analogue)
1x handy carry all to keep

1x air compressor / foot pump
1x shovel
1x first aid kit
1x axe / saw

Not sure what the difference between a strap and a strop is either.

Thanks

Hoops

You can strap the wife when she has a strop.

I would get 6 ton shackles. I don't think 3.25 would be man enough. And personally I would buy those from a reputable dealer, rather than eBay. Waffle boards are handy if you need to dig yourself out.

I suggest you should have something to put on the other end of the strap/strop. Sometimes known as "Never go Alone".

If it's a pay and play day that should be fine. Depends where but there are normally marshals, etc that help if you screw up, but they appreciate you having a strop. If you are green landing, best to have someone else with you.

Also, get a decent jack, axle stand and but of board to place under the jack, it's hard to jack off in sand and mud Rolling with laughter

Do a search on "lift & crane" or similar for the old group buys. Have 4 (2 x 5m & 2 x 10m with hooks on each end) and they are fantastic. Used them on many offroading jaunts including 3 Tunisia trips with lots of full throttle recoveries. Fandabiedozie. Thumbs Up

Agree +/ add

2 off 6 ton shackles - from a reputable dealer
4 pairs gloves.
Waffle boards
I don't know what a "Never go Alone" is.
Ground / earth anchor, for example : http://www.spirafix.com/
Perhaps the best bet is :

I carry a couple of smaller bow shackles for using on cars. From memory these are 2T or 2.5T. The two larger and higher rated shackles that I carry are too big for most cars. All from a group buy c.2006, possibly organised by Nonsticknick iirc.

Thanks All for the tips. Will start to get stuff together. As long as there is network I know there will be updates, about the only thing I am confident of right now. Laughing

I used to go green laning on my own all the time in the middle of the night, the darker the better, but then I had a winch which in 4 odd years I never needed to get myself out with once, and this is in a 50 year old series 2, used to do the same in a series 1.
Used the winch to remove a few trees etc.
Secret to not getting stuck? common sense, of course on a pay and play site common sense can go hang itself!

This is when a winch pays for itself time and again 4 times from memory!
Ps its the 90 not the series Shocked
