Steering knock/wobble/vibration
Hi, I'm new here so please bare with me if this has been done already.
Issue: My D3 has developed an intermittent wobble in the steering, wobble may be the wrong word so more of a flick. It can start at around 40 and still be there at 70 (or higher if on private roads haha). The frequency increases with speed but not the harshness. I can do the same journey with no issues.
The issue only presents itself through the steering wheel and is not affected by braking of steering input. The wheels are balanced and all the ball joints look OK.
If the steering wheel is rotated side to side with the engine off there appears to be excessive play and there seems to be a small clunk coming from the steering box.
Question: Is it likely that the steering box could be the issue or is it something else. If it is the steering box anyone know where I can get a cheep (but good) one (Euro Car Parts want £1170 for one)
Many thanks Rick

Its possible there is play in the bottom UJ, joining the steering column to the rack or a loose joint on the spline .. The inner end of the track rod can also exhibit wear, and can be replaced rather than the whole steering rack. You need to check it over carefully to see where there is any play.

Doing over 70 with iffy steering is a little ..............mmmm................risky check the clamp bolts, top and bottom on the steering column are tight before buying a new lower column. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

L319: many thanks, I'll get my friendly spanner to check where the clunk is and replace accordingly.
M3DPO: Sorry dad I pushed up the speed to see if the issue slackened off ie wheel balancing. I'm hardly risk adverse but not daft enough to cruise at high speed with dodgy steering.

A kaput lower UJ usually gives you the driving over cobbles feeling mostly at lower speeds.
Have you had the wheel balancing checked?
Ask them to check track rod ends and inner steering rod ends too whilst underneath.Mods:
