Excessive oil use suggestions |
|
My 2009 tdv6 has just started to use oil at what I believe is an alarming rate. Last year between services she didn't need topping up at all however since being serviced in October I have so far had to put 5 litres of oil in. I don't do an excessive Milage and in that time have probably only covered about 4k miles. She has developed a lot of smoke if not heated fully on start up from cold but I put that down to dodgy heater plugs. There is no sign of oil loss which is a first for any of the LRs I've owned but now fear a major engine issue. Any suggestions gratefully received. Discovery 4 HSE 2014 (Current)

-Excessive smoke on acceleration would point to the turbo.
-Excessive grey smoke on startup or after having been idling (ie, at traffic lights, then a cloud of smoke as you take off) would point to valve stem seals, but this being a diesel a bit of smoke on startup is not out of the ordinary.
-Not sure what sort of PCV setup these cars have, but on petrol cars sudden oil usage is often down to a fault with the PCV system or turbo having blown an oil seal. 2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

As an update, I no longer own the D3 as upgraded to a D4 however I do know that the engine did subsequently fail. Believe this might have been down to an oil pump failure but not good. Discovery 4 HSE 2014 (Current)

Probably due to the new owner not checking the oil level. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
