Knocking After Front End Refurbish |
|
Lots of posts about knocking and clunking on here but I'm not sure what else to replace now.
A couple of weeks ago, I had the following bits replaced on my D3 (on both sides):
Lower front wishbones (Genuine LR)
Inner track rods and outer track rod ends (Genuine LR)
Drop links (Meyle Heavy Duty ones from BOG)
Earlier this year I also replaced the front ARB bushes myself.
When I dab the brakes, I get a knock from the front end, almost as bad as before the lower front wishbones were replaced.
Took it back to my indy this morning for him to check it over again and ensure all bolts were tight. No problems with the fitting. He put it up on the ramp and had a good look around to see what was going on. Torque settings were checked. All OK. He agreed that there was some movement somewhere.
He then took it off the ramp and we watched the rear bush of the lower wishbone when he dabbed the brakes. There was definitely plenty of movement there but I wonder if there was too much?
It it's this bad after only a couple of weeks after fitting them, what are they going to be like in a year?
Has anybody ever experienced any substandard bushes in Genuine lower front arms before, please? Is what I am experiencing normal after wishbone replacement? I don't recall it being like that when I took delivery of it from new.
My only other thought is to replace the lower steering column but the steering action feels smooth (and no suggestion of a problem with the UJ there).
I'm tempted to book it in at a main dealer for them to inspect the lower front arms as I'm not sure what else to look for now.
Any ideas?

Thanks Geoff
That was on the list anyway for the new year and presume the arms have a 1 year LR warranty on them so I have a bit of time to get them checked out and exchanged if they are dodgy ones.
When you say "lower steering bush" do you mean this:

I'm only getting my knock when I dab the brakes, just like when I had knackered lower front arm bushes. Rest of the time it's a silent as a mouse (a quiet mouse) with nothing being transmitted up through the steering column.
I guess the answer is to not dab the brakes
Either way, I'm not convinced it should do this after new wishbones.

Steve take the car down a badly rutted track....even after getting my front wishbones changed the steering wheel was all over the place....might help pin down the culprit to the lower steering column....I have to say though, mine didn't cause a "knock" "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

It's not the anti rattle shims on the pads that holds them in the calipers is it ?

after I finally bit the bullet and did new wishbones, ours is like a new car, seems odd you still have this issue

Not quite.
I had the upper rear arms replaced in the last few weeks in preparation for the MoT yesterday (which it sailed through). The upper rear arms improved it a bit but there still seems to be quite a bit of movement from the lower front hydo-bush when I brake sharply (no other time). I'm beginning to wonder if this is normal for a D3? There are no other knocks and it's as silent as a mouse on the motorway, where it spends its life.
If it gets any worse, I'll get it checked out at my local, friendly Land Rover dealer as they are covered by a 1 year parts warranty (bought from TLO). If Hunters agree that there is excessive movement, I would hope they will replace them.
Probably should have put the armoured D3/RRS lower front arms on there in retrospect...

I have similar issue with my 07, after I replaced both lower front arms. The clunk noise only happens (1) when I have the steering turn to lock, to the left (2) and put the truck on reverse. That pop noise is very loud and doesn't happen every time I put the turn on reverse with steering turned. My inner tie-rod ends are replaced.

This sounds like you may need to grease your bump stops! Can cause the clunking on lock.

Nope. Those bump stops are greased and not the root cause :/
