Take a tip from the Village Idiot - Measure Twice, Cut Once |
|
Just a tip from someone who definitely knows better.
I'm off exploring a track on holiday when I see a height restriction across the lane. It's a simple affair made of logs, and with a 6 foot warning sign on it. I glance up at the picture on my visor, read 6 foot and hit access height and crawl forwards. Crunch/shake. (Hindsight can be so annoying.)
I get to the other side of the log, amazingly with the mobile phone antenae intact and the alpine glass roof un-shattered. I look up at the sun visor to work out what went wrong. Yep, idiot here had missed the inches on that lazy glance upwards.
Imagine my joy when I remembered that this was a dead end track and I'd be going back under the log on the way back... Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

IMHO the stocks would be too good for me. I really couldn't believe I'd done it. Muppet. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone, that does make me feel a little better.
It did set my mind thinking of something though - what could I stick to the front of the roof that would twang without killing anything and give me the chance to engage my brain/brake...
...I envisaged a Disco3.co.uk bright orange velcro-mount triangle, just 1" taller than the highest point of the car that would go just above the rear view mirror on the roof. Good warning when you hit it (scrape or crumple noise) and a damned good way of spotting fellow members even on the opposite side of the motorway without having to look for a rear window sticker in the rear view mirror vanishing at 180MPH...
Whatcher think? Please feel free to add your own ideas... Dr. Ian Malcolm:

How about a plain old radio aerial ? Mount it on the A-beam and adjust to the height of the rear roof. Probably wont even be noticed by people you drive by since most of them wont realise you already have an antenae in the window.

Errrrr I think the easiest solution (even for the village idiot) would have been to read the height sign properly........ Bodsys Brake Bible

Not wrong Bodsy - but how do you know if what's on the sign is accurate? If my sign had been accurate I'd have really screwed pooch. I like the aerial idea, though the Prius driver with a 2m stick walking in front is better Dr. Ian Malcolm:

...in the old days there were external radio aerials....on my Defender it was set to 1 inch higher than my roof so if you were going slowly enough it worked a treat (although the tip of the aerial was alittle bent by the end)......
still clouted several of those peage things on French Autoroutes though....... end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

watched a girl in France last year wreck an Audi A4 by going under a car park height barrier, no prob you'd think, just the two bikes and rack on top! Bikes stayed attached to the rack which peeled back part of the roof as the bikes folded over and down the rear screen. I did have trouble stiffling my laughing.
