I had also recently been quoted about R30k by LR Midrand for a set of 19" rims with MTR's on, but then decided to buy the extra set of rims and stay with the 18" coopers, cos I had the tyres already.
I am very happy with the Cooper STT's I have for offroad, and especially since I bought a 2nd set of rims its quite convenient to swop.
If you want extreme offroad tyres, then I really think you only have 3 options, namely the STT, MTR or maybe a BFG if you can get 17" rims. There are a lot of all-terrain tyres available now in 18" but I assume this is not what you are looking for?
If I was looking for tyres today, I would stay with the "standard" sizes, 'cos even though the coopers are awesome, they do rub against the wheel arch plastics when bouncing (because of the under-damped rear that we can do nothing about). If Cooper came out with a slighty smaller 18" tyre it would be the dogs dangles IMHO.
If you can still get the MTR deal, I recommend you go for it

I have been shopping and it seems there is no 2xx 65 17 Cooper AT tyre available I even looked for the BFG as Heine mentioned and both don't have 65 profiles only 70. 
Thus I get to your problem with the 65 18" that rub.
Any Ides what am I missing?  or I am I looking at all the wrong places?

Best rims and tyres must be 17 inch if you are going off road for obvious reasons, low profile tryes are not clever in the bush. Plus 17inch tyres are easier to source. Even if you change rim size etc ...LR can calibrate to suit the vehicle.
Know anyone who wants to swop a set of 18 or 18 for a 17 inch setup? Note the 17 inch set up can only fit on the TDV6 not the V8 as brake calipers are larger on the V8.

I had a chat to the Coopers importer and the 245/70 R17 is the same radius as the 255/60/ R18 
The quote I got for the Coopers ST or STT is R 1980 ex vat each  x6 
The question now is STT or ST for Namib and Bots and Moz?

Depends how butch you want to be  . On the D3 with all the electricary I would go for ST . You will get a better life out of them and they are much better and quieter on tar . But the STT's look so much more macho

I'm almost due for a new set of tyres and I'm not quite sure which way to go.
On the way to the farm in Thabazimbi the weekend the D3 punctured a tyre on the rocky road. It is still the standard Goodyears. I don't like the standard Goodyears as two of them would lose pressure slowly and would squeal on corners. They have done just over 28000K’s and would probably give another 5000K’s
Sooo, I am looking for tyre recommendations – on the 17†rim
I am thinking of Mickey Thompson 245/70/r17 not sure if they are available in South Africa or BF Goodrich 265/70/r17 not sure if they will fit without rubbing and of course what about LR warranty
All advice appreciated.

The Goodyears are girly tyers in all respect if you not doing off road just sand roads I would look at the Cooper ATR it has a much stroger design and sidewall. White LR3 TDV6 2007

I wrangled myself a set of 17inch LR wheels (so identical 53p offset), and have fitted Cooper ATR LT265/70/17. I love them. Gives me bit more ground clearance, I have tried hard to get them to rub (with no sucess, so I feel good about that), they are quiet (at 100kph wind noise is higher than tyres noise), and the car feels bulletproof on all sorts of terrain.

Thanks all, glad to hear that the 265/70/r17 fit without any rubbing, was worried about that as I calculated the overall diameter to be 31.60 inch.

What would you estimate as a fair mylage?
If what I have read that the Goodyear gives only 30k then I must be in luck done 10k and they are basically still new.

Can't give figures fro D3 , but on my defender I got about 50k on STT while a friend of mine with similar setup got about 75k on ST. Driving style probably also comes into it though .

Been investigating the tyre issue as well. Also liked the BF and the Coopers. But you can also try the Yokohama 265/65/17 or 155/70/17. They sell for just shy of R2000. Saw one at Tiger Wheel and Tyre - Menlyn.
Lost one Goodyear on my last rip to Namibia. Was a total disaster as I could not get a replacement in either Walvis or Swakop. Tyre too badly damaged to allow a tube. With another 600km odd left of dirt road - let me tell you - not a nice feeling.
I would go for either the Yokos (which look like they lot between the coopers and the BFG) in terms of off-road on-road ability.
