Dealer eventually found a solution to this on my last D4.
Took it in a few times before they stopped blaming lack of time for glowplugs to warm, user error, etc.
Turns out it was a temperature sensor that the was causing the issue. No idea which one, or where it is, but essentially the car uses it to decide whether it's a cold start or not. Not sure whether it measures ambient or engine temperature, but I would definitely get the dealer to start there as mine always stated like new afterwards.

Hah - Mine does this too - Glad I'm not alone.
Booked in for a service next week so will "mention" it then - Still in warranty so might get a result. Can someone confirm which temp sensor it is?

As my D3 has got older then it sometimes (not always) complains about cold starts when it's less than 2C or so with a 2-3 seconds of rough idling but always starts and settles down quickly to a smooth tick over, especially when encouraged with the loud peddle
Had fun trying to get it going once in the Alps when it was -24C but it started eventually. When I got home I discovered that the glow plug wiring on one cylinder head was disconnected (local garage didn't get my service business again!!). So even when its proper cold and half the glow plugs are not working it'll still go after some encouragement

Mine runs rough on cold start up for a couple of mins then settles down. I suspect the glow plugs are getting tired

Dealer is looking at this today as it has got worse of late - used to be only 2 degrees and below but will now do it at up to 4-5 degrees. Did anyone else get this sorted?

Hatfields have told me that it is "feature of the car". Odd that it is a feature that it didn't have for the first 3 years and is now getting gradually worse....

Shame that your dealer will presumably be a long way from me in Liverpool. Saying that I'm going to show this to Hatfields and see what they say.

Guaranteed to put years of wear on your cylinder bores by dissolving the oil and leaving no lubrication at the time it is needed most, definately a no no IMHO except in an emergency or on someone else's engine.It can when others can't,

Mine do the same..... With T<2 C.
I'm thinking about vacuum controlled damping engine mount? May be due to a different engine injection start up strategy for low T that produces engine shake at the first firing......
