How many sets of pads to a pair of discs? |
|
My passenger window hadn't been moving, just a twitch, so went into local dealer. Somehow there was now nothing wrong with it but they did advise me of some other points (I am at 28k miles and first set of discs and front pads):
Front pads were at 70% and discs showing signs of wear and so would need new discs and pads at a bargain price of £544 (£172 from advanced factors).
Rear pads had been changed and needed new discs and pads, as they were not Land Rover pads, at £423 (£154 from AF) and they could service the EPB for an additional £54.
Also needs wipers all round, but that is only £65.
So apart from the extortionate prices, how many sets of pads should a set of discs last, it's not a sports car so shouldn't have racing brakes, surely you should expect a set of discs to last longer than one set of original pads or is there something wrong in the design? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

2 or 3 sets of pads to a set of discs, depending on wear/corrosion
Much easier for a dealer to sting you for a set of discs at the same time. Easy money for them
More to the point, over £1000 to replace discs, pads and look at the EPB My D3 Build Thread

£1000 not including calipers though! A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

No, it was the one that's normally the cheapest in the area by quite a way.

It seems these days that pads and discs get changed at the same time. From the dealers point of view it's a lot easier and safer to bed in new pads on new discs. I went to fit New front pads to the d3 but the discs were near the minimum thickness and new pads (only) just runs the risk of hot spotting and warping during bedding on an uneven disc and having to do the whole lot again.

It all depends on the weight of your right boot, obviously you are like me and have a light one
Speed and reducing it costs money It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

More than 82.000 miles of the original set of pads (and discs) and they have aprox 3mm left to wear.
Driving style and roads matters.

I rarely change pads without changing discs, but:
1) I live on a sea loch;
2) It costs very little to do the discs as well as I do all brake work myself.
Saying that, my Merc SL discs seem to last ages. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto
