I think the D4 is a better design also has twin turbo so you can exercise it with your right foot

D4 has 2 turbo's.
D3 has 1 turbo.
Would be better to check/search the D4 section for an answer. In loving memory of FA54WSK.
Rest well old friend, your work is done.

I get the "ESF" message on my MY07 at least once per drive and every morning before I reach the end of my street but no lack of power or any other symptoms and the message goes away after about three seconds.
Is this the same as everyone else?
Its been doing it for about about a year but other issues have taken priority
It wont be a good one soon, it will be a new one the things I have replaced

I was in the same position , i kept having to re look at the you tube clip over and over , .
from you view you have it almost just looks like the end off a ball bearing that will push away from you or hook behind and pull it towards you ,,,,
you cant see a rod or arm or anything ( which is what i was looking for )
hope this helps

I found the "ball" in the end. It was nice and free with a small sticky section. Now all lubed up so I am happy. I had no problems it was pure preventative maintenance as the D3 will be sitting a bit more now I have a works van!

Great write up and thanks to some encouragement from Davedisco3 I succeeded in freeing mine by torchlight 9PM last night!
Spray copper grease worked for me and rated to 1200C
Only concern I have is there was no sign of a metal heat shield, presumably I should replace this urgently??

Planning on lubricating the actuator, and I have an easy question. On what side of the engine do I find the turbo?
I suppose the turbo is on the same place in every D3, steering wheel left or right. Been searching on the forum and found here that you can access it by removing the battery + box. My battery is on the right side. In another topic I found an access through the near side wheel arch, written by someone from the UK, so that must be the left side! 2017-...: Disco II Td5 auto, 1999, BAS remap, HD TC and auto box Ashcroft, Allisport IC, ACE, 2" lift only coils, BF goodrich KM2 265/70R17, FF front and rear bumper, TF steering guard and tree sliders, nanocom.
2013-2017: Disco 3 TDV6 HSE aut. of 2008, Britpart treesliders, IIDTool, RLD sump guard, BFG KM2 265/70R17, adj. rods, BAS remap + EGRs blanked, silicon IC hoses.

I'll answer my own question: the turbo is on the left side of the car.
I did my actuator today, many thanks to Beanie for pointing my in the right direction.
As always, when you've done it, it's easy, but I was looking for my actuator about 2 hours, I nearly gave up when I suddenly saw it. There are a lot of pictures and even a video on here, but I still had troubles finding it. To avoid this for other members I decided put some more pictures and explanation on here.
I started jacking up the car and searching via the wheel arch, seems to be impossible on a D3 with the steering wheel on the left side. The turbo actuator is not visible nor accessible by the wheel arch because of another big actuator: the steering shaft (I'm not sure about the English word, I mean that steel bar connected to the steering wheel)
Photo 1: view from the wheel arch, heat shield still in place, to remove with the 3 M10 screws
I was in South Africa a few times (sorry never drove in another country where you drive on the left side of the road) and my local college overthere told me the best place for a steering wheel in a car is on the right. I never saw a good reason for this, until today!
So that way it isn't gonna work, going from above by removing the battery box. Same method as described in the beginning of this topic.
Photo 3: The battery box on the left has to be removed, isn't a big issue because there is no battery in it.
Photo 7: Then you can remove half of the bottom with the 3 M13 screws and you have to unscrew the M8 bolt from the airco tubes holder, don't drop this one like I did, coudn't find it anymore
Photo 8: Ok now you can reach the turbo actuator. It is located in the middle of the red circle on picture 8. It is that shiny ball you see at the end of my red tool I made like the description and other pictures I found here on the forum.
My actuator was not really stuck, only the at the end (pulling it away from the engine) it felt like it was scraping against something. After wiggling and WD40'ing the scaping is gone.
Took it for a test drive, no spectacular changes in behaviour, lets hope the engine system faults stay out now.
