Engine Bearing Failure and Stop start

Hi all please take a look at this artical ........
http://www.federalmogul.com/en-US/Media/Do...122010.pdf
This really higlights my fears with the D4 stop start ......... these SDV6's (related to the TDv6) are already weak in the bearing department..........unless LR have taken special measures these 2015 cars could be a time bomb. Any thoughts......... Big Cry

They haven't just bolted on stop/start onto an existing engine - as is clear the issues and requirements are well known and will be engineered for.

I wouldn't have said that bearing failures are pandemic on the TDV6/SDV6, yes there have been problems but find me a manufacturer or engine which doesn't have mechanical issues Confused

An engine is a complicated, mechanical device which will inevitably incur some component failures per billion cycles Confused

Point taken ........... yes there are many V6 diesels out there doing there thing...reliably.
But .......... the ultra thin oil and multiple restarts are tough on the bearings......only time will tell.
Have LR installed special bearings???

Well, they don't want them to fail in service, so you have to assume yes!

Again, to my quote in a different post where people mocked more regular oil changes, for the cost of it, I'll change mine very regularly,

I run a 98% successful process in switching eco off everytime...almost a year in I would say 6 or 10 times stop start has been used.

Hi ... I am doing oil changes at 5k as I have always done ........ re eco engine off mode I catch it about
85-90% of time......... It would be really reassuring to know if upgraded bearings have been installed as a result of auto shut off.............has any body got contacts in the Ford engine shed!

I'd like to know exactly how much fuel is used while ticking over, and what it costs.

Lets say 1 litre an hour, which is about 2p / min. I would estimate a maximum of 5 min / hour when stop start is active, so thats 10p / hour saving when the engine is running.

Average anual mileage is 12,000 miles at say 40mph average speed, equals 300 hours running per year at 10p = £30 / year fuel saving !

Is it really worth using stop start to save £30 / year ?

That is not really the point - JLR have to be seen to make their engines more efficient so sit back and enjoy the £180 discount on the VED. Thats an awful lots of idling time....... Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

It will use even less fuel when it's in bits having a new ring gear and main bearings replaced.

JLR won't give a toss if it breaks after 3 years - in fact they will make money selling you the spares to rebuild it.

Having a mechanical oil pump where pressure is dependent of the engine turning is the cause of the problem. Could easily have either a stored pressure system or an electric oil pump to keep oil up to the bearing shells that need it when under stop/start regime. If they wanted to - that is!

Agree that would help bearing wear, and an alternator / starter motor bolted to one end of the crank would stop ring gear wear, but i bet neither has been done.

A pre-engaged starter should give negligible ring gear wear Whistle
