Help! anti theft bolts on wheels.

I found out the hard way (a puncture in the middle of nowere!!) that my LR3 did not come supplied with the special nut that enables one to undo the tyre security bolt. With allot of patience and 4 letter words I was able to undo the bolt to be able to change the tyre, with only a couple of scraches on the rim.
Has anybody had to remove the bolts without the special nut? I already tried at the dealers to see if they had a compatible t5ool to no avail.
I must wait for 20 days for a new set of security bolts to be shipped from UK!!

I take it that you had a good look for the keyed socket Gaucho, it is usually in a little cut out below the tool kit pouch, but some dealers leave them in other places like glove box / ashtray / etc. Could be just about anywhere in fact. Rolling Eyes

It could have dropped out of the pouch, and fallen right down the bottom of the cavity.

Best place to leave it is under the plastic cap that covers the spare wheel lowering nut.My dealer couldn't locate it once and as a consequence I now have two type X .

Discowex, if 'type ' is your Locking Nut key code, I wouldn't give out the code!
Someone may just purchase one, pay you a visit and take your wheels!!
I'd edit it if I were you?

take the security nuts off, and throw them away.

the next problem you will have is when the tool gets worn and slips on the nut.

throw it away and replace the nuts with standard ones, when was the last time anyone on this forum or any one you know had any wheels stolen ??

Locking wheel nuts are a total waste if a Censored wants your wheels they will get them. There are many "special " Tools out there that facilitate the removal of the nut in the event that you lose the key Whistle

Locking wheel nuts

Folks,

having recently purchased a Discovery 3 SE, with the awful standard 18" wheels I decided to try my RR supercharged wheels on for size. This is where it all went terribly wrong! after finding out that the wheels dont fit (too much meat on the spoke area and binds on the calliper) I tried to take the wheels off again - but guess what, I couldnt! - After much swearing and disgust I finally called LR assist. The problem lies with the locking wheel nuts which do not grip on the inner section of the nuts - all that happens is that the outer section spins. The car came with two locking wheel nut sockets - but although both locate in the right position over the nut and go in the correct depth, none will allow the nut to come off, its like the nut is rounded or there is too much tolerance between the socket and the nut, let me put it this way, I own the car and I have no chance of getting the wheels off so the prospective thief hasnt a hope!

Anyone else had this problem? - Is their a technical bulletin from landrover?

Am I going to be covered for this.....?

love the car, just wish i could drive it!

Hi Aberdonian, and welcome to the site, Mmmm, not heard of this problem, I know there was a batch of locking wheel nut sockets that were IIRC not hardened sufficiently and most have subsequently broken / failed when the owner has tried to use them. Do your sockets or nuts look obviously worn or does the socket open up a split in the side of it when torque is applied ?.....all I can suggest is making sure you have the correct / undamaged socket and hopefully your wheel nuts are not worn too badly,if they are, more drastic action like being very careful with a small chisel and hammer might just get them moving enough to get them off, if you can get to them without damaging the wheels of course, or better still (if it works), see if putting some wet sand in the socket gives it enough grip to turn them, Good Luck.

these nuts are driving me nuts!

Thanks for the comments DND3 - unfortunately i had to get the car recovered by landrover, the sockets seemed to be fine and the problem most certainly lies with the locking wheel nuts. Not impressed with LR assistance, or rather their incumbant hire company - who promised faithfully to have a replacement car by 10 am this morning - still waiting!

the guy that recovered the car said he has heard of this before and reckons it is usually rectified by just using a new socket - I'll just have to wait and see.

Anyone know of a nice set of 19" wheels up for sale that will fit?

I'll keep you posted.
