Auto gear change
Still on the learning curve.....I have the Auto box and was wondering roughly when/what speed do the gears change up in drive?
What I'm trying to say is if im driving like Lord of the manor around the town am I only in say 3rd gear for example against driving a little more lively & I could be in a higher gear going faster but using less fuel if you understand my theory?
They do have 6 gears these D3's..... not sure if I've made it to the 6th gear change yet
The ability to change up is still limited by the gearbox ECU even in command shift, it's speed related, you can force it up a little earlier but not much. Work on the assumption that the gearbox changes in auto at the best time.
You can get it reset so that it learns your driving style, rather than that of the previous owners Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Even if you get it to change gear the torque converter will adjust the effective ratio (provided that it has not locked up).
Years ago I experimented with an automatic Ford Zodiac on a steep hill. I felt that it was in too high a gear so locked it down to a lower gear, keeping the accelerator in the same position. The road speed and engine revolutions remained exactly the same as the torque converter compensated for the change.

This is my first auto. Just been reading about torque converters, very interesting !
A question though for any experts out there - why do the revs drop sometimes in the lower gears before actually changing gear ? I have noticed this mainly when the engine is cold.Velar MY18 D180 S Narvik

One hopes that there has been a few refinements since Zodiac days!

Being in a higher gear does not necessarily mean better economy. The ideal gear for any speed is the one that keeps the engine as near to peak torque as possible, on a D3 2.7 this is about 1900 rpm. Labouring at 1300 rpm up a hill for example, would use more fuel than driving the engine easier at 1900 in a lower gear.
Its what I was taught anyway.

Very interesting Gareth, still none the wiser for the gear changing trying to listen for them and count but I'm not sure. Oh well
