Good evening all, I have been reading up about auto box problems ie the slippage I get with mine. My question is, if there is an issue with the torque converter then why does my box only slip when in drive and not in sport mode or manual. Surly if the torque converter is then its . I only ask as I need my box flushed by Geoff and my D3 has done 118000 miles MY54 without a flush according to the cars history. I hope you can understand my reasoning for the question.

The TC has a variable lockup which is mode and condition dependant. Sport and Manual are simply different modes (as is the mode selected when Cruise is engaged) and change the way the TC operates.

as Robbie says different modes
a check of any fault codes present will probably shed a bit more light on it
sadly far to many people are leaving there gearboxes far to long before changing the trans fluid and the damage is done , a fluid change in a lot of cases can help but in some cases will finish the gearbox off so to speak
Thanks Robbie and Geoff for the replies. I had fault codes read about 2 weeks ago and all clear. I bought the car in October last year so only had it a year and has always been this way. The other reason for my question is when the car is warm the TC seems to lock up okay when it changes into 3rd onwards but every so often, again when warm if I come to a rolling stop Ie don't actually stop then accelerate from say a 5 to 10 mph roll through the gears sometimes it doesn't lock up until I release the accelerator. Is this what you mean variable ? I also have no judder from the gearbox but just concerned given the mileage it's done. I hope this hasn't confused anyone to much .
