Is it worth going from a disco 3 to 4

I was wondering if most people think about going from a 3 to a 4. I've fixed most of the problems on my 56 plate HSE, done the belts had a new fuel tank etc.

It would cost me between 10 to 15 k to do the upgrade to a 10 plate.

Moving away from a pre-production D4 does feel good. Especially the engine and 8-speed box combination (apart from the daft rotary gear knob).

Not worth it tbh. Had both.

I'd save my cash until there's something a bit more than a facelift.

D4 is miles better than the D3. Far more than a face lift and price hike. Next big Disco will be easily 40-45K min based on Disco Sport prices.

I'd say it's worth the upgrade. Take a test drive then decide.

Id still disagree, engine might be smoother, more powerful and 8 speed, but it's still a facelifted D3.

Like I said. Test drive a D4 SDV6 and see how vastly improved the power and take up are along with the body control. It's a world of difference.

OK the cabin is pretty much the same as far as practicality goes, and the exterior design is 'face lifted'.

Mechanically is been changed quite a bit. And it shines now. What the D3 should have been.

The D4 is a big step up,don't listen to those who describe it as a light "bling" makeover Whistle Wink
It goes better, steers better, handles better and stops better....my 3-year old interior is holding up very well with kids, dogs etc product testing it on a regular basis.
Don't get me wrong,I loved my D3,and would have no issues if I still had it,but there are only a couple of small things I miss, and they are few and far between...quick-flick rear wiper function is one to give you an example of how small.
Having driven all 3....The 8-speed moves the D4 even further away from the D3 than the 6-speed....
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Locking rear E-diff
RLD spare wheel protector & sump guard
Extended roof rails
Series 111 mudflaps

Definitely worthwhile, I loved my 3, hired a 6 speed d4 for a countrywide long weekend and now have 8 speed. I'm not an auto lover and if it didn't have the flappy paddles I'm not sure how I would like it long term, but the flappy paddles just make it complete for me, and I like the knob Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I've had an 06MY HSE for 7 years and loved it for all it can do. I upgraded about 6 weeks ago to a 12MY HSE and it improves what is an already brilliant car by a fair distance IMHO.
Power and acceleration is vastly improved with the SDV6 and the 8 speed box is very smooth. Fuel consumption seems greatly improved also. Fill to Fill on suburban driving returns about 28.6. Handling is nowhere near as vague as the D3 which suffered on my 06 (Improved on the 07MY I hear) and became almost tiring when towing for any distance. Towing my 1900kg tintent is a doddle and far more relaxed. I sat quite happily at 70ish mph for hours with the D4 and never felt anything in the way of discomfort from the caravan. The rotary selector is a bit naff but the kids like the flash of it raising, paddle shift is actually quite good for pulling my caravan up sudden inclines on mountain roads.
D4 is what a few years of multiple road testing by your customers on the D3 gives you. A sorted product which feels more complete from top to bottom.

Had an 06 HSE which I loved, remapped when SWMBO bought her MY10 D4 & it was even better, changed to an MY12 HSE in Sept & smile even more.
All round it's a better more responsive drive, never thought I'd use the flappy paddles but I do, DAB a big + for me as well.

A D4 should always feel better than a D3, simply because it's newer and will probably have covered far less miles, meaning it's components have suffered far less stress. I've just bought a brand new Fiat Ducato van and with only 10 miles on the clock it feels like a Rolls Royce. But within a few thousand miles and a few months it will just be a smelly old van like all the other smelly vans I've owned Smile

When I got one of the first D3's produced back in 2004 it felt like the 'dogs dangly's' not just because it was a step forward from the D2 but because it was brand new. When I drive my mates MY12 D4 with only 20k on the clock it feels tighter and smoother than mine simply because it's younger and low miles, but I've never been convinced it's a massive step forward from the D3.

I'm sure when people are driving the D6, 7 and 8 in years to come they'll be saying what a pile of poo the D3, 4 and 5 all were Laughing
