Oil pressure light in D4 3.0 and 2.7
Anyone knows why the D4 3.0 and 2.7 have not oil press light if there are an oil press sensor?
We dont understand why there is no warning if there is a oil related problem as it could lead to a catastrofic failure.
(the sensor is there, cable too, but no red light in cluster even tested leaving it disconected, bridged to earth, engine on, off, waiting 10 minutes,....,whatever we try: no warning light)
Oil press sensor running ok, tested with multimeter
Various D4 3.0 and 2.7 owners asked: no red light

Never seen a D3 or a 2.7L without an oil pressure light and aside from oil pressure failures they have all come on with the ignition and gone off shortly after engine start. D4 3.0L oil level warning is through the message centre and only comes on when there is a detected problem. It would be great if there was a pressure transducer for the oil so you could see real pressure on a diagnostic tool rather than having to screw in a gauge to check oil pressure.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I've just checked mine (MY13 HSE), and according to the handbook, the oil pressure warning light is between the Battery Warning Light and the Red Triangle at the top of the driver's display. However, mine doesn't illuminate with either the ignition on, or at start up as part of the lamp check.
Is this normal, or have I got a bulb failure? Just for info, there's no faults showing on my IID Tool.D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

As already described above, the D4 3.0L does not appear to have an oil pressure warning to the dash before start, but it does benefit from an oil level warning which is displayed on the message centre.
I'm not particularly convinced of the wisdom of this setup, even though the oil level warning is a good enhancement.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Interesting! I phoned LR Customer Relations and spoke to a lovely lady who admitted she wasn't technical! All she could do was recite what's in the handbook and didn't seem to grasp the difference between an oil PRESSURE problem and an oil LEVEL problem. She suggested that I spoke to my dealer, as she didn't have access to LR Technical
I then rang my dealer, who let me speak to one of their 'Techs'. His understanding was that in the D4, the oil pressure light wasn't part of the lamp check on startup, but was actually there and would illuminate if there was an oil pressure failure.
I had a look on Topixx, and it was interesting to note that from MY15, the paragraph about the oil pressure light illuminating during startup has been deleted.D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

Just to update on this one, I've PM'd Pete@Landrover to ask him for verification of what the Oil Pressure light should do on what model years.D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

I guess all Pete will confirm is what is stated on Topix. What we have learnt here is that there is a 5 second delay from the switch being pulled to ground before the light comes on; Topix gives no description of this pause. The early MY owner's manual also appear to be in error, but corrected in the most recent edition.
So that leaves the one big point. The EOP warning on this engine will not detect a fluctuating oil pressure. If this engine experiences a degraded oil flow, such has happened on a number of 2.7L D3s, this indicator will not provide a warning until the oil pressure decays below the switch value for over 5 seconds without even a momentary fluctuation above the switch limit in that 5 second period.
Looks like madness to me, but I would welcome other opinions.

For those who want to see if their particular model year behaves the same way here is the simple test:
Remove engine cover, remembering to replace the oil cap, and locate the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor. It is a simple pull to ground switch with a single grey (slate) wire located at the front of the left hand bank, near the air manifold split and the EGR pipe:

I should have used a different back-probe colour than black, but a closer shot of the test lead inserted into the sensor plug:

With the car running you can then trigger the warning whilst sitting in the seat by simply grounding the other end of the test lead. There are a number of exposed fasteners in the door jam that provide a good ground.
For my own MY13 after a 5 second pause the light on the dash comes on:

You can simulate a fluctuating pressure by providing an intermittent contact. The light on mine does not latch-on and goes out as soon as the ground is removed, but does not come back on unless it has been constantly grounded for over 5 seconds. Unlike the D3 the sensor warning does not go direct to the instrument cluster and is just an input to the Body Control Module, which in turn sends a signal to the instrument cluster to trigger the light.
This needs a fix otherwise we will have catastrophic failures that could have been avoided. JLR could introduce a revised BCM load that would latch the warning on if the pressure switch signal fluctuates.
Sorry about the grainy iPhone 4 pictures.

Hi All,
Rather than quote TOPIx which I am aware several members will have already looked into, I am looking to see if I can gather some further information regarding this. Please be assured that as soon as I have more information I will be responding.
Many thanks,
Pete

Thanks Pete, having run a few tests this afternoon this does look like a problem with the BCM fault warning logic. The EOP sensor itself is fine.
