Buying Advice D3 2006 2.7

Hi I'm looking to trade up from D2 to D3 and have an option on a 2006 TDV6 in S trim with 6 service stamps over 75000 miles. What do I need to look out for or what questions should I ask the dealer? Any major service jobs that should have been done by this age/mileage? Appreciate your feedback.

Timing belts every 7 Years or 105K miles whichever sooner so should have been done, often not!

I would check to see if it is actually an S and not a misbadged Base model like mine was. A genuine S has cruise control and a few other things over the Base version.
Then check everything very carefully. The Discovery is a complex beasty and expensive to fix if you aren't able to DIY. From what I've found, stamps in the book are worthless. You need lots of receipts for any work done.

Hi,

I sold my 2006 S a couple of years ago when it reached 70,000.

My main reason selling was I didn't need it to tow anymore and price of road tax but other reasons were it was due the belt change at 7 years and I had never done any work on wheel bearings, suspension bushes , drop links etc.. And from my experience I knew these weren't far off by following other people's experiences on here.

So first thing I would do is check service history invoices and if it has not had belt, bearings and some suspension work I would factor that into price. Also has it had a compressor as 8 years is a good run if it hasn't. Also check the parking sensors and handbrake mechanism work properly.

If its an 06 you will not have to worry about egr replacement as just blanked mine when played up.

Mine had been a demo previously so was quite high spec for an s with heated leather, privacy,voice active telephone, hardon kardon sound, DVD etc..

I see your from the coast I'm up near airport. Avoid the newburn dealer , I found team valley landrover very good.

Thanks for the advice and I'll see the dealer tomorrow to discuss and check the paperwork. Think I will also check the MOT log online for any advisories in last year or so. Just noticed it's an automatic box.

Check if any juddering (like driving over a cattle grid) could be a sign of the torque Convertor going in the auto box, won't get much change out of £3k, some members get a gearbox flush to help it run smoother,

Depends how good you are on tools, basic things like pads and discs, wheel bearings and even the front upper/lower arms are straight forward and cheapish to buy so you save yourself money at the dealers.

Check to see if it has detachable or fixed tow bar if not they can be up to £160 on this site.

Here are the issues I have had with my Jan 06 (55 plate) TDV6 S auto with 114000 miles on it. I bought it in Aug 2012 with 84000 miles on it.

Alternator
Suspension Compressor
Door Lock * 2
Wheel Bearing
Early gearbox oil change and Dr Tranny to "cure" vibration.
Intercooler Hose Split
Disintegrated hand brake shoes
Rear Diff failure
Front anti roll bar bushes
All diff oils
2 services
2 MOTs
Timing Belts
Swollen fuel filler pipe (?) car takes 10 to 15 minutes to fill up

Hey Numpty - roughly how much do the main items here cost? If you have time - I'd value your feedback. Is rust an issue with the chassis or are the D3's better than the rusty D2's?

Alternator £250 fitted by Flack
Suspension Compressor £550 fitted by Flack
Door Lock * 2 £177 for one and about £165 for the one soon to be done
Wheel Bearing £177
Early gearbox oil change and Dr Tranny to "cure" vibration. £250
Intercooler Hose Split £27
Disintegrated hand brake shoes £77
Rear Diff failure £252 labour and £1000 for the LR service exchange diff
Front anti roll bar bushes - can't remember but was done at same time as timing belts
All diff oils about £50 or so
2 services £250 each average
2 MOTs
Timing Belts £599 on Stratstones deal
Swollen fuel filler pipe (?) car takes 10 to 15 minutes to fill up - yet to be done but I think
replacement part is £160 ish

As for rust I had mind done at Waxworks in Morpeth (no longer trading) in Oct 2012 when the car was nearly 7 years old never having had any under sealing of any kind done from new by the looks of it.

Quite expensive repair log. I'll see what receipts there are when I view tomorrow. The belt wasn't done at 70k service but dealer (non LR) is happy to have this work done as part of deal for peace of mind.

Good order on inspection but rear wheels appear to dip in towards body towards top of tyre just slightly. Is that normal?

Go through the service manual carefully. Check the belts have been replaced as mentioned above. Odds are it's on the market as the last owner didn't want the huge bill to replace them.

Read through this forum and look at all the very expensive and very common issues they suffer from.

I've got a 2005 TDV6 at 70k miles and I'm regretting buying it after my very reliable D1. In less than a year I've spent over £3000 on it :

New brake discs all round.
New front wheel bearings

New front lower suspension arms
New upper rear suspension arms
These two cost nearly £1300 due to the sheer bloody effort involved in getting the old rusted bolts out and the need for a 4 wheel alignment.

New propshaft (bearing failed)
New suspension compressor - £800
Cam belt service.

The EGR valves are knackered but thankfully the previous owner had them blanked, or it would be £400 a side to replace them.
The transfer box is noisy, but it will have to stay that way as I simply can't afford to change that at the moment.

It's such a shame as they are lovely cars to drive and are amazingly capable. I've owned Land Rovers for 30 years, but now, unfortunately my advice is walk away and buy something that isn't a money pit.

Most of w hat you say is normal wear & tear for year etc ,but L/R are not cheap to run so unless you have some sort of warranty or know of a independant who charge a lot less.Mine is 06 77k from new best vehicle yet to date has L/R warranty but i do budget for services etc and would still keep until i find some thing that is better than what i got as to me most other makes are to me inferior to mine.At the moment my wife still loves it which is good for me Thumbs Up
