The Green Lane Association (GLASS) would be a good start. They have monthly meetings in Aberford and membership gets you access to Trailwise which is very useful for researching lanes to drive.
Have a look at www.glass-uk.orgMY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!
MY2012 D4 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - retired to a new home

So, I need to get a good jack - recommendations for what constitutes a "good jack?"
Is something like a waffle board useful for putting the jack on, or is a piece of wood OK?
Waffle boards are useful but then just with a jack are a bit OTT and perhaps too long (screw some squares a plywood together to make a small square base.
If you are taking a "standard" bottle jack then they will help, a trolley jack is better still but takes up more space and maybe harder to position, best of all is an air bag jack - enclosed is mine in Morocco whilst checking for an annoying "squeak":

"How much?" - in this market you tend to get what you pay for - my one in the photo above is one of the military spec ones of these - http://www.easylift.co.uk/ - I would advise if you need an air jack that you get one that can cope with the weight, is robust and well designed/protected, and that you buy some axle stands. I am led to believe it can be quite exciting if one goes pop at a critical moment........

Very very worth it though! We used one on a slate bank and the track we were driving was about 2/3 ft sunk into the ground, so 'walls' alongs boths sides of the car not to mention it was half way up a mountine in wales on the PNC a few years back!
Without that we would have been there for a long time trying to get it changed!!2009 Discovery 3 HSE - Gone
2019 Anniversary Edition D5 - Going
2019 HSE D5 - coming!

J@mes is spot on in my view.
If you are going to get more adventurous on your own then get a winch as well. Hand operated don't cost a lot and can pull you out forwards or backwards, but a good electric winch just makes it all the more fun. With winch add tree straps and consider a ground anchor.
