Aaaaargh Top tailgate!

So, one of the hottest days of the year and my tailgate wont open Big Cry ....... made worse by the fact my gsd is in his rather large crate in the back........

Thankfully, my crate has an emergency exit so we could get pooch out Razz

So, pressed and held the dah buttons, tilgate wont open, removed the rubber cover on upper swith assembly and pressed micro switch, still not opening but can here electrics working......can also here electrics working by pressing dash buttons.

So, do i presume I have to get in the back..... some how and muller my carpet and trip to gain access?

Any help would be mucho appreciated Thumbs Up

ok......update!

Managed this morning to get the beast into my workshop, got the dog crate fully dis assembled and removed via back passenger doors to gain access to the rear door card.......got a couple of screw drivers up under the trim and managed with out breaking anything to get all of the top side of the trim panel out far enough to see what was what............

Now the fun begins........... the links I followed via this forum and others on line......regarding getting the tail gate to pop open with suspected cable issues ......are WRONG!

There is a much easier way to get the lift gate open with out doing the skin on your hands.....arms and fingers etc.......

1/ gain access to load area by removing everything out via the passenger doors
2/ put 2 x flat bladed screw drivers 75mm apart (roughly where the top bend is) up under the upper trim panel as far as you can push them and gently lever both out together, this should ease out tpart of the carpet trim panel, as it comes out keep pulling and you will get most of it free from the tail gate
3/ locate the water shedder and cut it back to expose the actuator
4/ get a long flat bladed screw driver and gently push the plastic cover away from you, pushing where you can see the cable going into the actuator
(you dont need to spend hours like i did trying to flick a lever as suggested by others if you suspect the cable is broken, as it wont get the lift gate open!)
5/ now the plastic trim cover is clear of the cable outer, put the same flat screw driver onto the cable outer where it goes onto the metal backing plate and wack it with your other hand, this releases the cable from the plate
6/ grab cable, pull it out to expose broken end and pull it...........voila......day light as your lift gate opens Mr. Green

Mine had done the normal and broken the elbow off, quick trip to caffyns and 50 quid lighter I had the new part ready to fit.
7/ remove the screws (x4) under the little black caps to remove top plastic trim cover, best done with tail gate down then pull trim towards you as its held by 4 x clips
8/ remove side ties
9/ remove carded carpet panel
10/ slacken 2 x 8mm hex bolts to allow actuator to come out after unplugging
11/ remove torx screws x3 holding latch mechanism to tailgate, un plug and remove to bench
12/ undo 2 x tiny torx screws to separate back plate from actuator
13/ fit new latch/ cable assembly to actuator put back screws
14/ re fit to tailgate
15/ put all your trim panels back and make a cuppa........job done!

How can the How-To be wrong?
You've practically quoted, word for word, what I did and I followed the How-To. Rolling Eyes
I don't remember anything about flicking any lever.

was not referring to your topic........which i have still not read!

I was referring to plenty of others that all refer to a type of "how to" on opening the top tailgate based on cable failure........even the oem pdf mentions putting a screw driver into a small hole in the actuator to open the top lift gate.......it dont do anything (and my local landy dealer told me the pdf was wrong). you have to pull the cable out if the cable end has broken Whistle

As Bornpompey says at stages 4, 5 and 6, pop the black outer cable from the metal housing and then you can simply pull the inner cable. No shredded knuckles!

As I'm not aware I've ever written a How To for this particular problem, I've not actually read it myself yet.Rolling Eyes

Mmmm I have a dog box with no rear escape hatch.

Car's now 8... What would anyone recommend replacing as a precautionary measure? Is it just the top latch?

There's no way I'd be able to access it internally if it broke... Shocked

If it's still got the original release cable in there, (with the "L" hook made of crumbly cheese,) it's well worth replacing it with the newer one.

I'd also think about adding an emergency release cord as well, just in case of an electrical failure.

You might need to be a bit imaginative about where to route it though with no rear access Confused

John, you should prioritise that as urgent and do it before you next use your pooch box. Thumbs Up
