You would do that under the old system if it was untaxed at the point of sale so that pain's only partly down to this new system. ____

The old system at least gave a bit of leeway. If your car was untaxed (like mine) you could tax it 2/3 days before the end of the month for the next month. The new system appears not to have this luxury

didn't the sale go through at the month end and while the purchase was going through you were allowed a few days test drive  Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

If you wanted to collude with the seller if nearing the month end to date the sale as being at month end then you can circumvent the problem.
However if you were the seller would you take the risk of new owner not flouting any laws in your name, I wouldn't
