Advice on my new Disco 3 and roof rails/bars please?

Hello, I am the very proud owner of my 1st Discovery 3 - i bought it last weekend and found your forum a few days ago. Having read some of the threads i am already getting together a little list of things i want to do to improve it.

I have a question about putting a roof box on? I don't mean to sound stupid but i have been looking on ebay for roof crossbars ( i have a halfords roof box which fits to square crossbars ) and i cannot work out if i have to fit a set of roof rails first to fit the crossbars onto ( the roof rails are quite expensive from what i can see and i think they are supposed to be fitted in the factory?)

Anyway i have the hse model 2005 plate and i had a look at the roof and i can see a rail of sorts that sits flush to the roof with little apertures along each side ( presumably to fit either feet into or the roof rail??) but it isn't an actual roof rail which sits away from the car roof i you know what i mean? Anyway i am very confused and would like to buy something which doesn't cost hundreds so that i can fit my trusty halfords roof box on to the roof of my new car - we are going to Germany in December to take my new pride and joy out on her 1st long haul outing Very Happy

Any advice would be gratefully received.

it is confusing ! got to roofracks.co.uk and put the make and model in there.

It will come up with what you need. I would suggest write down the parts (i.e thule foot pack number etc) and then go on e-bay and buy them used.

You will save a fortune and they cant really go wrong assuming all keys are present.

Can you tell how bored I am at work ? parts are below that you need. assume you have a t track like my HSE.

You need:

Foot Pack 753, Fitting Kit 3027, SquareBars 769 (127 cm)

can get the whole lot new for £135.0 which is cheap.

Yes roof rails (they are more like tracks for the roof bar feet to slide in) are needed to use roof bars.

Roof rails don't have to be factory fitted, and there are non-Land Rover options.

See here for non-Land Rover rails and bars: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic66618.html

Edited for clarity.

If you take a look here http://media.disco3.co.uk/ownerinfo/LR0074...72_ENG.pdf you will get a good idea of what the rails look like that the crossbars fit into. As you'll see from the first couple of pictures, you can get full length or short rails but either will work.

Thank you - i would have had no idea what to buy otherwise. I have had a look on ebay and there are a couple of the things you guys listed that are second hand and collectively i should be able to get all three for approximately £105 Mind you i guess i may as well pay another 30 and get them new. Thanks again for the advice!

Could anyone tell me if these are any good - again found on ebay but negates the need for a foot pack ext ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311061154460?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT - seems like a cheaper solution but not sure if they will work ?

They might be fine but looks cheap. For me i would say for safety and the sake of damaging your own car go with the proper stuff. Thule stuff is v good and u can always sell it in later if you get rid
of the car.

Thanks for the reply Smile OK that's fine - i am happy to pay a little bit more, i only asked about the ones above because they will probably only get used about once a year if that but i already have the roofbox so its no hardship getting some new roofbars too.

Try exeter roof boxes they are on the old A30 in whimple. There prices are reasonable. I needed a spare set of keys for my roof bars and paid 12 quid for a pair.

I am in the same position now... Just bought my first Disco 3 and need to fit roof bars..!

So, do I go for long or short rails, and black or silver on a black car!!?

Even then... Which bars? Thule sound good...

Doesn't look like it possible to do it without the rails at all though.

What did you do in the end?
