Webasto Pre-heat kit now available

Sorry if this has been said before, a search in the forum did not find it.

According to July's Land Rover Enthusiast - Shopwindow section - Webasto have launched their engine pre-heat kit for the Discovery 3.

Under £200 including fitting and VAT.

There is nothing about it that I can find on their web page though.

I have checked with Webasto here in the Netherlands and they have quoted me Euro 800 ex VAT to install the pre heat clock. Remote control is not available, according to Webasto it "influences other electrical systems causing numerous failures". Webasto told me they have installed some ten clocks now. Would be interested to get more info on DIY solution for 200 pounds "only".

Dutch Disco,

I don't think they are up to date, it's very new.

It's not a DIY solution, as it's supplied and fitted by Webasto's dealer network according to LRE, and the £200 is inclusive.

I'll call my local dealer on Monday to see what he knows about it.

Story so far

My local dealer has replied as follows;
-----
Further to our discussions today regarding the Webasto Upgrade Kit for the Discovery 3.

The kit is supplied with a Timer and Bezel, specifically designed to fit in the front interior light panel.

The cost to supply and install the Timer upgrade is £194.00 Excl VAT. with the installation taking place in our workshop.

Land Rover have issued 2 Technical Service Bulletins to cold starting

LA303-004 Difficult Cold Staring.
LA303-009 Cold Start Throttle Response.

We therefore advise all customers to take thier vehicles to a Land Rover Dealer to have the bulletins carried out: Before the Engine Pre Heat is operated.
It is possible of course that some owners have already had these bulletins carried out.
---------
I have asked if he can supply any Webasto part number or reference and will let you know.
The price, if I add the VAT, is higher than quoted in LRE!
I am not sure what is meant by "fit in the front interior light panel"!

TX for your extensive answer so far. Did I understand right that this part pre-heats engine only and not the interior? Webasto quoted me a "full function standheizung" so including heating the cabin.

Yes, you are correct in that this is just an engine pre-heater.

But by the very fact that the engine is warm already, the heating will be much quicker to warm up.

That's correct.

The only case that I personally see the need for a cabin heater is if you are going to spend time in the vehicle while it's stationary, without the engine running.

In a camper, for example.

The brief period that some of us had a working heater makes me of the opinion that the ability to warm the cabin is of far more importance than warming the engine. It was a sad day when we lost this ability.

Has anyone compared the diesel used to heat the engine with a pre-heater compared to the average amount of diesel used to heat the engine when driving from cold? I use the car twice a day from cold for short journeys and it kills my MPG! If the benefits are tanible the pre-heater could pay for itself.

MPG is one side, extended engine life and a warm cabin after start is the other.

The major problem is the battery when using the Websato twice a day without driving a longer distance.

My fuel consumption increased quite a lot during last winter. It seemed like the Webasto was running all the time (it's usually below -5 degrees centigrade where I live), even when the engine had reached normal operating temperature. So if the new kit will make it possible to run the Webasto only when needed, ie before start-up, I will definately save fuel in the long run.
