ok most people think this is the thermostat . im still leaning this way given its sometimes gets upto temp but mostly doesn't . seems to be enough coolant and I think pipes are warm
any more advise for a complete dummie ?
where would I look in order to locate the thermostat
would be good to get to the bottom of this as its getting colder outide and I cant get very warm in the car blessed are the losers ,for they determine the winners

stick with me robbie and if you can bear with me ...
im really slow when it comes to these sort off things im just trying to avoid taking it to a garage , I do really appreciate your time and thoughts and I know you have been very helpful .
if its ok to ask ,im jut wondering if you could tell me where to look for the thermostat under the hood and if there is anyway to tell if its playing up .
one thing I noticed is that sometimes the needle does rise to half way point but then if I put the blowers on hot to check it out the needle slowly drop down a third ?!
im very sorry to be a pain in the
if this is consensus is that its the thermostat ,I may try and replace it I guessblessed are the losers ,for they determine the winners

I'm not sure I am helping. Tracing the flow around and checking it with a cheap IR gun is an easy way of checking coolant temps through the pipes/radiator/valves/matrix when you do not have an experienced mechanics hand. The code reader will give you an idea of HEVAC faults and sensed ECT; the functioning of the actuators or not will tell you if the heat is being directed to the right place.
I'm not a fan of condemning parts before diagnosis. From the little we know so far I am not fully convinced the thermostat is at fault. Primarily the thermostat's job is to keep flow away from the radiator when the coolant is cool so that the flow can concentrate on engine and heater warm-up. If the stat is bad it can delay the warm up but it will not prevent the eventual heating of the heater matrix. If you trace where the heat is going it will answer the question regarding the health of the thermostat as well as the heater matrix.
There are probably other ways of skinning this cat but I offer that the pointers I noted a few posts back work for me.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

thanks Robbie
you are right there is no point throwing parts at it if here is still doubt I think given my lack of knowledge in this department I will probably have to take it in to a garage .
again I appreciate you taking the time to try to help blessed are the losers ,for they determine the winners
