Inconsistent braking....

As reported I have a slight steering wheel shake when braking from motorway speeds......but I have also noticed an inconsistent braking when coming up to a junction.....I can only describe it as the brakes slightly "grabbing" when slowing...giving a slight "pulsing" sensation...
At first I thought it was transmission related ie the gearbox just changing down naturally when slowing, but I knocked it into neutral as I braked coming up to a junction today, and it's definitely the brakes....
Any thoughts before I go and get them looked at ?

Warped discs maybe? Could explain the pulsing perhaps?

I'm starting to suspect as much Steve...they were replaced once at 10k under warranty.....my car is now on 33k and I'm not sure they'd replace them again under warranty.......I'll be a bit hacked off if they are warped again...... Rolling Eyes Thumbs Up

Have you tried a bedding in process to redistribute pad material evenly? It could just be pad transfer?

Worth a try before another trip to the garage?

Find a quiet stretch and do 5 hard stops (on the edge on the ABS cutting in) from 60 to walking pace. Do not come to a complete stop. Brakes will be very hot after this so allow to cool fully before parking up.

Had very similar issues last year on my old D3 bus.

Turned out to be a failing caliper.

I shouldn't have thought that would be the case with such a new D4 though.

Ok,went out and tried mik's suggested remedy, and although it's too early to tell,I'm pretty sure the "pulsing" is much reduced, although not completely gone......perhaps another go might see it improved further. Thumbs Up
What I will say is that it's the first time (fortunately) that I've really stood on the anchors in anger in the D4..... Deeply impressed...I really didn't think they would stop such a big lump in such a short distance......especially 6 times in quick succession from 60mph.....I tried really hard to get the abs to kick in,but on an admittedly smooth, warm and dry bit of Tarmac,I couldn't..... Nice to know what it could do if needed in an emergency Very Happy

Yep, the D4 brakes are astonishingly good. Quite a difference to the D3's humble offerings!

had this now for the 3rd time (exactly the same symptoms), and on 3rd set of discs and pads - was OK for a short while, and now started again whilst I was in France. New discs and pads fitted in May. Will be calling the dealers in the morning to get it back in once more.

It looks like its disc quaility on the OEM Brembo discs

So mine is now as bad as it was before the last discs and pad change (just checked the invoice, an it was actually mid June, so 2 months ago, all genuine LR parts fitted at main dealer)) and is booked back in for Sept 16th. I've got brake shake through the steering wheel and the same pulsing (stop/not stop) felling when coming to a stop.

There must be a quality issue with the D4 discs (Brembo). It cant just be one or two of us, given the number of D4's on the road. If my discs are changed again it will be the 4th set in 12 months.

How do I get this sorted properly, once and for all?

Al,mine are massively improved using the fairly drastic technique suggested by mik above......I noticed it particularly today when slowing from speed that the wobble/pulsing sensation has vastly reduced,so much so that I'm not going to book it in at the moment....
Mine were main dealer fitted but they've only started doing it recently
Worth a go before another trip to the dealers, although I do think 4 sets in a year is pretty excessive Confused

until I had one caliper replaced last week, I had a pulsing when braking - especially slowing in traffic. Rather like bigdave.....

are you sure it's not that? I was expecting a warped disc but all that was replaced was the caliper and it's lovely and smooth again....

Euan

I'll give Mik's suggestion a go - its really Censored me off though, as having a braking system that works smoothly and efficiently shouldnt be difficult in this day and age.

Had a similar problem after fitting brand new vented EBC discs and pads .
The initail great braking lasted for about 3 months and then a light shudder from the front developed when braking lightly .
With severe hard braking there were no shudder .The shudder only got worse over time .
Problem disapeared after I discovered that the left rear caliper does not release completely .I replaced both rear caliper seals and pistons as well as rear brake pads due to the uneven wear.
As mentioned perfect braking again .
