Low Coolant

Low Coolant warning came on last week, topped up with water (it was Sunday night and didn't have any anti-freeze in the garage).

Warning is back again today.

It's hard to see the levels but looks like the top part of the tank (the red coloured bit) is full but there's an air gap down into the rest of the tank.

Sorry, know that's a poor description but hoping someone will recognise what I'm talking about (someone usually does on here when I post similar ridiculously non-technical descriptions of my D3 problems).

I've read somewhere about bleeding the tank...do I need to do this?

Most likely you have the common fault of a porous float in your tank (as I currently do). The float no longer floats and thus sets of the warning.

Answer is to replace the header tank with the newer version, about 50 quid I think.

Worrying though, isn't it!

As above, most likely the float in the tank. Easy job to swap, just remove the passenger side headlight to get good access and clamp the bottom hose when you undo it and then its just a case of topping up the tank when youve swapped it over and you wont need to bleed the whole system, just the one on the top of the bottle.

Pete.

On second look, it looks like mine might be using coolant thought. Would that be the case with the header tank issue or does it sound like another problem?

When deciding on coolant loss it is worth applying masking tape and marking the tank level when cold and only checking the level when it is genuinely cold (ie first thing in the morning). I have seen people chase phantom leaks when comparing hot with cold and a level surface with a non-level surface.

Header tanks rarely leak but unions, pipes and EGR coolers are more common.

well, it's definitely a leak...got underneath and found a wet patch (which looked like coolant) on the left side of the bottom of the engine

At least youve found the leak now rather than it causing more damage.
