SCRAPING NOISE FROM UNDER CAR WHEN TURNING |
|
Guys I've noticed an odd noise coming from under my car lately.
I can only describe as a kind of scrapping noise as though metal was rubbing on a metal tin or similar. It also seems to be more noticeable when I am turning right and not left.
Has anyone any idea what it could be or have something similar?
Thanks

If its on full lock it could be the steering bump stops need greasing.
Have a search, five minute job.

I have had exactly the same thing, got it two days before holiday pulling the tin tent so took to Geoff.
We thought it may be bump stops or a problem with one of the discs so did all that and made sure everything else was tight and safe.
Then, the car did it again leaving a roundabout in Calais, turning right.
Since that episode I've tried hard to recreate it and I can't - still don't know what it is and am awaiting it happening again to see if I can diagnose further.
These turns were less than 90 degree turns as well but were when the car was reasonably under load - certainly not full lock, not even one complete turn.
I'll watch the thread with interest... can you recreate the problem? MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

Guys had car serviced this morning and mentioned all the above so he took me around the car and showed me the location and told me that there was no way this could be the cause of the noise even on full lock so wondered if anyone had any ideas? I had a similar problem earlier this year. Local mechanic greased the stops but couldn't see anything else that was a likely culprit. I thought it had been resolved but about a month later, it returned. Always turning right and always just as I got towards full lock.
Mine turned out to be the inner track rod. Problem was completely cured when I changed both sides as the car was also starting to tramline and got worse over about 3 months. There's a kind of cup and ball socket on the end of the inner track rods and when these wear the clunking can start. I set out to cure the tramlining and also cured the clunking by default.
These just might be your answer, they were for me:http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/btr5517k-...2584-p.asp alternately, do both sides at the same time as I did: http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/d3srk-dis...3633-p.asp
Jack the front up and check for play on each front wheel at the 3 oclock and 9 oclock positions. If it's got play there, it might be time for further investigations. Mods:

Mine has had this same problem occur twice, always turning right and never at full lock.... Completely random occurrences and have tried to, aggressively, replicate once or twice to no avail.
Has had lower arms at front placed, Geoff has checked for play all, round and everything tight
What's this centre prop bearing and would that have this precise symptom as a cause? MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)
