Oil consumption

Hi just checked oil today on our D3 it has used about 3/4 litre for about 2500 miles just wonder if this is about the norm ? my BMW v10 m5 loved the stuff 1000 miles per litre @19.50 a go ouch !! . We are going over to France soon and want to carry enough oil to be on the safe side as may do up to 4000 miles

cheers

120k on my manual D3 and in all the 7 years I have had it I have never topped up the oil.

Seems a bit high to me.

Mine did use oil when it was new(ish) but that was many years and over 100k miles ago, since then never had to put any in between services. But like a true god fearing LR driver I carry 2 x 1 ltr bottles of oil, just in case. Whistle

60k on my manual D3 - oil changed every 6 months, and no tops up in the interim.

Mine has used about 1/4 of a litre in 11k miles. Not all easy miles either Whistle

I find that the harder the car is driven, the more oil vapour is sucked out of the breather system, and burnt through the engine Thumbs Up

mine has 220 TKM on the clock and it takes 0,5 l per 10 TKM.

Do not worry about the oil in France, you can pick up Shell Helix 5W30 for 35,-- € in a 5 l bottle in almost every supermarket. Carrefour, Casino and Auchan sometimes sell it in a 7 l package ( 5 + 2 ) for less than 35,--.

New (alloy) engines always "use" oil - the castings absorb it for a bit then once "full" stop. Normally takes 10-15K to settle down.

Nearly 9 yrs old, 60k miles, nil oil required between annual oil changes (approx 8k mile intervals), level doesn't even drop from upper level marker. Very Happy
