HELP! blown fuse now smoke from under n/s rear

My rear n/s brake light bulb went last night so I took off the inspection hatch in the rear left and noticed a 15A fuse had gone replaced that and smoke started coming out from under the left light/quarter panel Big Cry

3X bulbs have blown in the rear light and I now understand that the fuses in behind the panel on the left are for towing electrics?

tow bar

hi
can almost guarantee that wiring for the towing electrics has rubbed through and is touching metal behind the bumper.
you need to remove the rear bumper to check this
cheers

Is the towing electrics always live? when the ignition is off the 15A fuse sparks when I put it in?

take the rear tailgate light out and follow the tow electrics cable to the sockets. you can easily remove the cabling , check/fix the cable and retry.

does sound as if the 12S cable live feed (Pin 4 - green) wire is damaged.

towing electrics

hi
it's a known fault for the towing electrics cables to become loose and chaff against the metal under the bumper or become snagged against one of the stabilising weights underneath the bumper.
Do not use your car until you investigate the shorting out as their is a potential fire risk, get that bumper stripped of and look for chaffed wires, the wire might need replaced or it might just need a good bit of insulating tape wrapped round it .
I would also put some plastic convoluted tubing round the wiring and properly secure it .
the white socket gives you permanent live all the time so it might be that one that's causing your problem as the black socket isn't live until the car is turned on ie indicators ,lights, fog reversing
cheers

I wouldn't be so drastic as not to drive it - just take the fuses out. you can remove and refit the wiring without removing the bumper, will only take 15 mins Thumbs Up

you could

hi
you could do as dunc suggests but if it were to go on fire due to the faulty wiring your insurance company wouldn't pay out as it's an existing fault that you knew about and didn't fix it, just a thought.
as for the the fitting yes you can get away with it by not removing the bumper but that probably is a major factor why it's shorted out as it hasn't been secured properly to the top of the crash bar in the first place , someone has installed it and not secured it properly by removing the bumper and pushing the clips into the pre drilled holes in the crash bar, do it properly and you get no headaches further down the line.
it's up to you but it's not what I would do its a D3 if it's going to go wrong it will at the most inappropriate time Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
cheers

You only need remove the passenger side rear tail light & drop the spare wheel down & move it out of the way to get to the towing electrics cabling... Have a look at this
