from my limited knowledge I would imagine that the rear winch is more of a pull you back out of some cack before you get too far into it, whereas the front ones have to be far meatier because they're more likely to have to pull you through lots of gloop? is this the idea? and theeeeennn......???

Yes, the rear winch is really just to give that little extra pull when you cant go forwards,
As Andrew says, the front winch can incura hell of a lot of load.
If you are looking for a winch for the front of the car to self recover then I dont think anything less than 9500 is appropriate, but thenwhatever you get is better than nothing. Its all about how much you want to spend and where you intend going. Duncan

And safety. If you use a winch that is not rated high enough and the vehicle some how gets into worse position things could end up being lethal. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Hello Guys,
Been away for a day or so, so hers some catching up.
If you are set on a permanently mounted rear winch may I suggest ging down this road....
1. Remove the spare wheel. There is now plenty of room for a rear winch tray. Get the rear cross member replaced with one with a built in hawse.
2. This set up is common of winch challenge event trucks, but I doubt it has been done to a D3 yet. Only a matter of time I am sure.
So all you have to do now is find somewhere to put the spare ( Kaymar bumper perhaps)
There you go, job done.
It's only am tter of money.
regards

AndrewS - Been thinking about that hydraulic winch ever since Christyler posted details of his installation. If you ask me that's the spider's pyjamas. I can't remember seeing actual spec's but it looks substantially smaller and lighter than the 9000lb electric.
Maybe I'm just dreaming, but if you had the hydraulic winch installed in front you've already done the hard work. There's lots of space in the chassis rails to run some rigid hydraulic pipes up where they won't get hurt and all the way to the rear. Then you install some quick couplings at the back, and if you can sort the controls out, you could hang a nice light little hydraulic winch off the tow-hitch.
Is this possible?
Are the hyd winches that much smaller & lighter?

Argh! Just when I thought I had killed the inner demon that keeps whispering "Hydraulic, hydraulic, you know you want hydraulic..." more people come along muttering the same mantra. It's all your fault Chris!!!
I'd pretty much decided against it on the grounds that if you did manage to cock it up when winching, not only are you stuck but you've got no steering if someone else manages to recover you. Unless someone has come up with a way of mounting a dedicated hydraulic pump somewhere in the bowels of the D3 engine bay? I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Baben yep no reason why it cant be done.
Nodosh I am currently looking into fitting a 12V hyd power pack to the vehicle. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Ah! That explains why TFC is looking at the space next to the offside chassis rail, opposite the compressor and receiver. Got talking to him about possible locations for a receiver for my compressor and he muttered (in a pm sort of way) about looking to locate a hydraulic setup in the same place.
Ok, the light is on now. Dim, but on.
Now I need to have another think about where to mount my compressor receiver, damnit! I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I've absolutely no idea what you are on about, but it sounds great! Now where's my bottle of Jameson, must top up my glass!!
AndrewS's comments sort of point to the likes of me not bothering with a winch at all! Bearing in mind I will only do the little bit of off roading, is this correct? Or will the simple low cost tow bar method be OK for this type of use?
Chris
where is my Jameson!

The D3 is a very capable off roader, however when they get stuck the get stuck good and proper. TBH I cant see you ever needing a small winch, but hey thats just me. If you were using a small winch to recover a stuck Suzuki 4x4 type vehicle and were using your D3 as the anchor vehicle then this may be a different matter. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I think the olnly off roading I'll be doing that's serious enough to possibly need to winch me out, & I'll be with the guys with all the lovelye Hydro/Pnuematic/electro/carbon doobry ferkins & they love showing how it's done
Other than that, I'm not silly enough to be hooning around on my own as it is still an everyday vehicle afterall. Bodsys Brake Bible

I think what Andrew is trying to get across is that a small winch is fine, for a less weighty car than a D3 i.e. a Suzuki.
However, if your trying to pull 3 ton of D3 plus several hundred pound of kit/mud etc then you need something as bit beefy.
I have toyed with the idea of a winch - but TBH i will try and keep my D3 within my own limits i.e. if i think im gonna get stuck i aint going there.
Of course there will be the odd exception - but thats the reason you usually go out prepared - two vehicles. Unless your a serious offroader and need the "kitchen sink" (like AndrewS/TFC/Slimer/DG et al no offence to anybody else who i've missed ) then i'm not going for a winch - but i will buy the man who pulls me out of the gloop a very large beer

It will be if you want to carry it and attach it to the hitch unless you are built like a Greek God then you will be able to fit/carry whatever you want....Sir
I did consider the removable winch but they are heavy.
