Australia 2005 Discovery 3 4.0 V6 Petrol S Auto Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

I do not think the hourly rate is the real issue here - an A service is basically changing an oil filter and draining and refilling the sump, and a bit of an overall look at the vehicle. It is generally relegated to the apprentice and should not take a great deal of time, (even on a Landie Rolling Eyes ). A $360 labor charge would include someone going for a long lunch..... Shocked

The D3 had it's 36,000km service done yesterday by the local N****N dealer. Same items completed as the LR bloke does for an A service, total cost $160.00. (Service indicator was not reset as the hardware was not available, of course. But I can live with that...)

Interesting comparison with the quote from the LR shop.

Well to put it in perspective (As having 7 years at university, 2 degrees, and then 4 years post grad training to get my qualifications) my maximum hourly rate (charged in blocks of 15min) is $180 (4 x $45) and minimum rate is $160 (4 x $40). The first is full fee paying (and get most back from private health fund) the second is bulkbill of which the person gets back $33.
I can easily remember when the hourly rate for a tradesman was $40-$60, But now minimum is about $100 (AND of course the customer does not get to 'claim' any back!). Of course the tradesman doesnt get this sort of money as the dealership takes a fair chunk.
NOW, I am NOT saying that I dont earn enough, please dont get me wrong, AND I am NOT saying that tradesman are paid too much either. But just thought it made an interesting comparison.
DONT ask me what I think of dentists fees though (which you cant claim back)!
 regards
Peter

Pbhawkin you did not mention, and there are parallels with the dealers. The cost of the: building, equipment, support staff & updated training. Not to mention the time you and others put in after hours or when the paying customer does not see the work being done on their case. Thumbs Up
Did you think I would leave you crying,

well to put it in perspective I had the Commodore serviced in Maroochydore once when on holidays and was charged over $500, the same service in my town would have been almost half that, then again they don't have a massive showroon to support or a few bits of eye candy or the lounge with the DVD player going or the need to support a shuttle bus. service level and equipment was the same with a better customer attitude too from the locals. IMO you are paying for the service centre image implemented by LR on top of the actual service.
I'll take just the service thanks.
