EGR Valves - is cleaning them worthwhile? NO REPLACE 'EM
The time has come for me to get my EGR valves sorted
Post 07 D3 so may not go down the blanking route...
Now inspired by Disco Mikey superb 'how to' write up http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic31658.html
The question is do I clean the old ones?
Is it likely to be successful?
Has anyone done a clean up?
Last week I cleaned the EGR valve on my diesel engined Toyota Avensis
It was giving all the same symptoms that D3s give - you know black smoke and no low down power
Very easy to take off from the top of the engine. No more than an hours job including the cleaning
What a difference - once again drives like a new car showing well over 50mpg
Any advice and experience from my learned friends on this forum would be most welcome
Although I am expecting to have to buy nice shiny new EGR valves for the D3 Cheers, Dave in Essex

Wow that was a quick reply Mikey and great photos
Your 'Black Museum' photos have convinced me to get some new EGR valves ordered
I will post my findings with photos when I do them 8)
Do you recommend using using LR parts for this of a job?
Thanks once again

The valves are made by Valeo, so they can be bought from the aftermarket. Expect to pay around £140 each, inc VAT My D3 Build Thread

Both EGR valves were replaced by me with nice new ones last Friday
You need loads of patience to do this job
The right hand EGR is easy to change......
......compared with the left hand one. Access is severely restricted by the turbo boost pipe
New one versus the old one 8)
Replaced the T30 bolts with nice new M8x16mm as recommend by Disco Mikey
So that's it. Job done. Loads more photos in my galley if you are interested
Car is now once again more responsive and lively
What I did find with the old EGR valves was that one was very stiff and seized up with carbon.
This appeared to be an original valve - car now showing 66.5k
Service history showed that a certain main stealer had replaced one 3 years ago
Thought they should be done in pairs
The mini ball bearings were OK and not all broken up.
Both valves cleaned up OK with brushes and brake cleaner, paying attention to under the flange of the sliding shaft.
Kept as spares......will I refit them? No chance!
Tips for doing this job:
Make sure you have loads of light. It's dark down in the bowels beside the engine
I used a 2D workshop light hung on the underside of the bonnet, an LED workshop hand lamp and a 3w LED head torch
Do not drop anything I dropped a little bolt and my favourite M8 rat spanner - spent nearly 30 mins looking for 'em
Make sure you have plenty of coffee on tap
Give yer turbo actuator arm a wiggle and spray while you are down the left side with the battery tray off
Clean the MAP sensor while you have the top engine cover off. It will be gunked up if you are having to do yer EGR valves 8)
Celebrate saving loads of money by opening beer and/or a bottle of wine
That's it for now guys. Thanks once again to Disco Mikey for his How To guide and inspiration Cheers, Dave in Essex
