Running rough - injector problems - now sorted

My D3 has started running really rough/misfiring particularly on tickover, this gets worse as the engine gets hot to the point where the tickover is so slow that it stalls on selecting drive.

Worse still it that once the engine is hot, if I allow the revs to drop below about 1000rpm, the accelerator pedal stops responding entirely leaving me unable to do anything except leave it turned off for half an hour or so to cool off before I can move again.

My Nanocom shows me the following fault codes -

P151B, Idle speed control - RPM lower than expected
P02A7, Cylinder 4 balance - fuel trim at minimum limit
P02A2, Cylinder 3 balance - fuel trim at maximum limit
P2299, Brake pedal position/accelerator pedal position incompatible

The first fault is to be expected and the last is probably due to my left-foot braking while trying to keep the revs up, the other two are suggesting to me faulty or blocked injectors.

This has happened since I foolishly ran out of fuel the other day, I've replaced the fuel filter and when I emptied the dregs out, a mixture of diesel, dirt and water came out, I'm suspecting some of the latter may have got through and damaged the injectors, I've also added a full dose of injector cleaner to the fuel and put a little bit in the new filter when fitting it but this seems to have made no difference.

I've got the car booked in an injection specialist place in Canterbury next week so they can do a proper diagnosis rather than just replacing injectors one at a time until It works properly, fingers crossed now for a not too hefty bill Rolling Eyes

More than likely your filter in your tank is blocked it's on your low pressure pump,I would check your low pressure reading first at the valve at the back of the engine before driving in to deep Thumbs Up

There's plenty of fuel flow coming from the bleed valve and when it does get going it doesn't seem to be down on power, well not much, 70+ MPH uphill without a struggle anyway.

What sort of pressure should I expect to see at the bleed valve?

Just checked the pressure at the bleed point and I'm getting about 6 PSI with the engine running, it definitely sounds like a severe miss-fire though, it's particularly bad at tick-over but you can hear it with a few revs too.

With the codes I've read and the circumstances of the onset of the fault, I'm convinced there's an injector problem. I'll just have to wait and see what the specialist makes of it next week Confused

All 6 injectors were removed and sent for testing, two units found OK but the other 4 said to be "failed on idle test". The guy at the testing place said the fault was due to faulty solenoids.

Anyway, four new injectors and the two original good ones back in place and the car runs as good as ever again 8)

To say I'm relieved would be an understatement but it's been an expensive lesson in why you shouldn't run out of fuel Evil or Very Mad

The injectors went to Injection Development in Canterbury, they seem very capable Thumbs Up

Initial testing and four new injectors came to £912 incl VAT, better than I expected TBH.

Very good price. Were they new or recon injectors?

Mine could do with being checked before the cold weather comes back...

They were supposedly new but supplied as exchanged units, not sure how that works Confused

£175 each + vat with a years warranty can't be too bad, I was expecting about 300 each incl.

Edit to add; they normally charge £20 a time for testing but halved that because I was buying some new ones.
