Approved warranty or non main dealer

Hi all further to my post of what gear box to get in a Discovery 4, I have seen a discovery for sale from a non main dealer, he is a dealer and says the car was his wife's. How does it leave me warranty wise if I buy from him, as it will not be an approved car?

His wife's car..? Is that a good or a bad thing?
Anyway, what month & year is it?
Establish if it's still under the 3 year LR warranty or not.
If it's not, is it under any other warranty? Is he offering his own warranty? And so what are the terms & conditions (non-dealer warranties seem very limited - read the fineprint)?
If it's just about to go out of warranty, you can get the warranty extended by Land Rover. Others have been happy getting an extended warranty through the likes of Warranty Direct.
If it's out-of-warranty, you can get Warranty Direct, but there's usually a 3 month wait after purchase before you can claim. (The wait doesn't apply if you are going straight to them from the LR warranty).
And above all, make sure the D4 has a fully documented service history.

Thanks for the reply Marky. The car was registered in September 2012, it's an HSE 26k miles, it has privacy glass, rear DVD, 20" wheels, side steps and towing pack. He wants £40,000 for it and I've offered him £38 if it fits the bill after me test driving it with no part exchange. Dealers always tell me when I'm selling, extras don't add to value, just make it easier to sell. If I do a autotrader car history check would this tell me it was his wife's car do you think?

Regards

Ian

sorry for not getting back sooner - something came over me and i decided to do the meguiars 3 step cleaning plus clay bar on my D4, so been out for a bit.
Sept 2012 will be under LR warranty to Sept 2015, so if anything goes wrong just take it to your nearest LR dealer.
Wouldn't worry whose car it was - you are covered by LR warranty. Just check if you are happy with the number of owners.
Come Sept 2015 you can extend to LR warranty or go straight into a Warranty Direct warranty.
Sept 2012 will be the 8-speed auto with 255 hp engine, so a nice choice.
Edit: I would still do an HPI check.
Edit2: at the back of my mind was the question of whether it was a private (wife) sale or trade (dealer) sale. But if credit history checks out, then you can always fallback on the LR warranty if anything fails on it.

Hi MarsKy

Thanks for the info, I have done an autotrader check on the car and all checks out, one owner, no finance, no write off etc. I am going to have a look at it in the morning, so will see what pans out.

Regards

Ian Thumbs Up
