Couple of Tech questions.. - Updated (Intercooler hose fixed
Evening all
As the new owner of a 90k D3 2006 Auto - there are a couple of things id be interested to sound people out about.
I run the car using millers additive and achieve very good MPG generally speaking - (average 26.5 and 32 - 34 on the motorway - these are calculated not the computer)
However I have started to notices some fairly nasty black soot on booting the car - from 30 - 50 ish or any where under full load.
Now given that this is a pre DPF vehicle am I right in assuming this is just the over fuel to the engine under full load being dumped out the back? or is something more sinister going on? - Ideas welcome - am i just being paranoid?
And to avoid starting a new thread - The car has little oomph low down unless u give it a boot full - to the point where my wife even complained about it not having a lot to pull out of junctions - would blanking the EGRs help with this low down power thing - or is it remap time.
Thoughts appreciated on the above ... Many thanks
Alex

There really shouldn't be any smoke , do check the pressure hoses for leaks and the intercooler ,oily residue can be a tell tale sign. I would definitely blank the egr,s it is a simple job and doesn't take long You're not afraid of the dark are you ?

Blank the EGR's regardless. If they have not failed yet, they will soon.
Blank them and be done with it
While under the bonnet, check the big intercooler hose for splits.
Both of these issues will cause poor throttle response, and both very very common My D3 Build Thread

Thanks all
I thought it didn't sound quite right.
To be honest with the way this vehicle has been services i.e everythign at LR dealership it wouldnt suprise me if th EGR's have already failed and been replaced - But ill get the blanking kit in and then when I have the time Ill check if A they arent already blanked and B - get on with it.
As for the Split hoses ill get some new ones in as well - no harm in changing a bit that has the potential to fail i guess.
Still think the car is excellent - it just reminds me of keeping italian motorbikes - just need consistant TLC.
Is there a how to for the egr's and the hoses - ill abuse the search function later aswell but noithing like being handed the info.
thanks again

Right...
well today I had to drive a round trip of about 150 miles and by about 80 miles I had no power above 2000 rpm without a laaaaarge amount of black smoke -
It got worse and worse...
As I drove I took a punt at the intercooler hose being the fault - called Mansfield 4x4 in bury st edmunds who said to run it round as I was passing to diagonose the fault before I bought thier hose I didnt need.
Turned up.. popped the bonnet took them 2 seconds to diagnose this...

that was on the back...
there was a 2" split on the front too... but I cant get the picture to link right now.
They didn't have any genuine ones in so I took the pattern hose they had and fitted it tonight..
All fixed
Better power all over - the smoke cleared after a quick blast (any residual smoke is probably the egr's I imagine)
So - thanks to this forum for another quick fix....
Im getting board of.... they all do that sir

Had the same problem with mine just looked at the intercooler pipe and there's a two inch slit in it. Just going to order the pipe now from advanced factors. Just a quick question is the top intercooler pipe I need as it is at the top of the engine. ThanksDiscovery 4

In the next 12 months i plan to do the blanking plates and a decat pipe as the turbo lag from a standing start catches me out occasionally - As much as I like the sound of the remap I can do the plates and de cat for a damn sight less than the remap cost.
The car has more power all over now which is great

Wouldn't bother with the decat, ( unless you know an MoT tester that will pass it. ), they are no longer legal from earlier this year, if a cat was fitted from factory build.

Mine passed its MOT with the Decat fitted
No bribery took place, was the most genuine + honest car I have probably ever took for an MOT, with no mention of it...My D3 Build Thread

Well, I suppose it is all down to the tester, and I have come across some complete ts in my time. Personally I would not be shelling out for something ( and I'm not even Scottish), that could possibly cause a D3 to fail it's Mot, they are prone to enough faults already.

People don't expect a D3 to be modified. And the downpipe is mostly hidden

Well I replaced my hose last night thanks to advanced factors for the new one. This is what I found, the car now has more power and after a quick blast on motorway it now doesn't smoke.
